This review is from: Rules for Reverends (Paperback)
You are starting a career as a reverend? You have learned for years how to preach, how to worship, how to pray? Well done - but nobody has ever told you what Jeremy Fletcher describes. Forget all you have ever learned about your profession! It will not help you in any way. Or has anybody told you how to treat the flower arrangers? Has anybody told you how to treat deans and bishops? Fletcher will do - and this will be important for your profession. Your parish will forget your worst worship, but flower arrangers will never forget your criticism!
You can believe me - I also know, like Fletcher, what I'm talking about!

5.0 out of 5 stars History can be amazing!, 29 Aug. 2013

Teaching Religious Education at a secondary education school in Germany I had been looking for a book that shows the differences in Christian developement in Europe, especially since the time of Reformation. Moorman's "History of the Church in England" is very helpful and useful, easy to read (even for German pupils)and easy to understand. In my opinion it is a book that shows the great lines of the Christian Churches' developement, according to personal faith as also to political necessities. Moorman shows that faith is always not only a personal affair, but also depending on the political, cultural, social and even economical circumstanzes of the certain time. Of course you may swim against the tide - but Moorman shows the consequences.
Talking about the Reformation you learn that you cannot compare Reformation in Germany with Reformation in England. Reformation as a whole does not exist; to understand Reformation you have to look at each country itself.
Thinking of English readers I miss some explanations about the reasons for Reformation in Germany - you must know a little bit about the circumstanzes on the continent to understand not only the religious, but also the political consequences.
But to everyone who wants to learn something about English history, depending on the religious affairs, this book can really be recommended.

Teaching Religious Education at a German Secondary Education School, I often have been asked for information about the Church of England. But what to tell to the students? In German school books you will hardly find information. So it has always been a strange work for me to answer the students' questions. Till I've found this book! All you want to know you can find in here: A short summary of history, a lot of information about today's work and practice, about music and architecture.
And by the way - being a lay minister of the Evangelical Church of Germany I was very astonished to read that I would be allowed to preach in the Church of England as I do in my own parish!
So - if you want to get first information about the Church of England - this book will be the right one for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mathematics - easy and clear, 4 May 2012

Teaching math at a German school, I had been looking for a "summary" of maths for a long time. Now I've found! The most important rules, a lot of examples, written in a really good way. In the 10th form (last form before the exam in Germany) one can repaet the most important problems pupils have.
The best reference for the book: Some of my pupils have already bought it for their personal preparation. And: they learn math and English at the same time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good for coaching, 4 May 2012

I've ordered this book for choaching German pupils, preparing their Realschule-exam (the GCSE in the UK).This book is beside others for preparing the GCSE a very good possibility to repeat English grammar with "original English texts".
The greatest difficulty for German pupils is to write English essays. Also in this case the book is a really good help. A lot of examples and tips for a good and correct writing can help the pupils.
The way the book is written encourages the pupils to work with it. Selina: "It would be great to find such books in Germany and to use them at German schools! It's fun to look into it."
This book is really to be recommended - not only for English pupils!

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Philosopher's Stone" in English lessons, 4 Jan. 2012
This book has been the first my pupils have read in English. They are in the second year of learning English and it worked very well! They hadn't often to use a dictionary - and they enjoyed the book!
"Will we read another Harry Potter?"
I Think, we'll do!

5.0 out of 5 stars Real help for advanced learners, 4 Jan. 2012
As a German I've learnt English as a foreign language at school. Not using the English language every day, a lot of grammar knowledge gets lost. Every time looking into a German standard English grammar? That might be too lavishly. But using the Oxford A-Z Grammar is an easy and successful way! Short answres sum up all you want to know. And coaching German pupils in English, I could quickly find answers to their questions.
This grammar does not substitute a complete grammar while learning English for the first time, but it is a very helpful little book for advanced learners - it will accompany me on my travels to the UK.
