5.0 out of 5 stars A romp down the blue memory tunnel, 1 Mar 2013

Petr York is not the first person that comes to mind to write about the Tube, being one of the few utterly urban people never to have used it until commisioned to write this book. He manages to turn his lack of experience to advantage with a highly personal entertaining description of the areas above the Piccadilly Line. In his comfort zone ( within the confines of the Circle line) he whisks one along with his well observed wry epigrams of city life. More at home in Mayfair than in Boston Manor his descriptions of the more outlying areas tend to go no further than the local underground station. Was he frightened of the natives in Hounslow that he dared not tread beyond the comforting palisade of London Underground? This is a merry book and a great present to anybody with the slightest interest in London

A good lesson in this book that might possibly have saved the Costa Concordia.
With the extreme accuracy of modern GPS systems it is sometimes tempting to go close to various types of marine hazards. However the charts , even those used for navigation systems, are not always so recently surveyed and their accuracy might not match those of your boats systems.
It so well presented interesting book packed with useful information and items of general interst

4.0 out of 5 stars A book for newcomers and Oxford Natives alike, 29 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A wonderfully esoteric collection of articles about the Historical connections of local sites and objects. It is elegantly researched and written with great humour and charm.
However long you have known Oxford the esoteric facts about the city and its environs will surprise you and amuse you .
You may well need powerful glasses and/or a magnifier to read it. The book is only let down by being in such small print

Because it is a compact book in reference from it is easy to overlook the scholarly research that makes it so interesting. Buy a copy for yourself and then many more for your friends.

Top 10 Florence and Tuscany (DK Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guides)
Top 10 Florence and Tuscany (DK Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guides)
by Reid Bramblett
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars Simple , clear and useful, 19 April 2011
Not a guide for travelers but a very useful starting point for tourists. The basic information about the region is presented in foolproof way and the indexing, illustrations and layout mean that it is a book useful for incurious illiterates who nevertheless need to know something about where they are going. A starting point but its "Tuscany lite".

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Writer about Gardens, 19 Dec 2010
For many years Robin Lane Fox's articles about gardening did much to boost the sales of the financial Times on Saturday. His writing has been a welcome change from the faddish designer-celebrity garden correspondents who know all to little about the plants that they recommend. This book sums up his long career in gardening to date and would be a welcome present for both the experienced gardener and those who, like me are married to one and wish to find out what it is that attracts people to the garden.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good lesson in the newness of nations, 10 Oct 2010
Colbert, working as he was for the most absolute of kings, Louis XIV, realised the vital importance of a good road system throughout France. The work that he began went on for 200 years and the discoveries made by the surveyors of the successive french governments revealed not one nations but a gallimaufry of peoples at very different stages of development. Graham Robb's description of their discoveries combines a Historian's detachment with humour and a natural talent to amuse.
This is a beautifully produced book which will give lasting pleasure to anybody who has it on their shelves
