5.0 out of 5 stars Lastly I would say this is a a short document and very easy to read, 2 Jan. 2015

This is a very well researched and informative document. Informative, that is, for believers and non believers (of the Islamic faith) alike. It approaches all those tricky issues with which Islam (or Muslims) have a problem: gender equality, democracy, homosexuality, FGM, honour killings and many more such issues. For each one it references the relevant passages in the Qur'an, the hadith, the Sira or Sharia to allow one to understand how the islamic world view is informed by these texts and why that presents a problem for the modern world rational thinker. This is for the most part not an opionated book, the author is careful to highlight the challenges objectively without being critical, but it does attempt to invite Mulsims to look at their religion much more objectively. Lastly I would say this is a a short document and very easy to read, so definitely worth investing the time and minimal cost to do so.

I think this album is briliant. I'm a big fan of Vicente's and was really happy to see he'd got a new album released. As with previous albums I found this one to be a grower. Like all complex music, you don't warm to it instantly. And I'm not a great fan of Irish folk music, so hearing this for the first time was a bit of a shock. But he, and whoever did the arrangement, have done a great job of weaving together the two styles of music: flamenco and Irish folk. Plus as usual with Vicente there are touches of jazz and pop in places, and even a touch of funk on Cancion de Laura. Vicente's musical composition as usual is outstanding, beutiful melodies, harmonies and exquisite guitar playing. Hard to pick out a top track, but Roma is one that every time I hear it now I'm uplifted to the point of tears. That's how good it is!

If you're only interested in the message, as opposed to the delivery, then this is maybe for you. I didn't watch the original series, though I am old enough, and having read the reviews here and elsewhere I thought I'd give it a go, since I have developed an interest in cosmology recently. But by today's standards the graphics are really poor and the way they are used repetitively distracts you from the message. You could I suppose just listen to it as though on the radio, as Karl Sagan's voice is expressive and pleasing to the ear. But watching it, for me anyway, is a turnoff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly informative, a fascinating story., 13 July 2010

I've often wondered about the Asians and Africans who come to Britain and how different their culture might be to ours. You hear about honour killings and about how one family has brought shame on another. You hear about female circumcision, polygamy and arranged marriages also but you never quite understand the whys and wherefores of these strange (to westerners) customs. This book explains it all. It's a story of love and of tragedy. It also a story of immense injustice to women in the name of Islam to which Ayaan turns all her energies to fight against, even though it means being ostracised by her own family.

4.0 out of 5 stars You'll need a magnifying glass to go with it, 11 Dec. 2008
This is undoubtedly a well written book. Though somewhat academic in style it is still quite readable. My main beef is the fact that some of the diagrams, which really require a full sheet of A4 to allow the reader to analyse them properly, have been squashed into half of a book sized page. So get yourself a magnifying glass as well.
