5.0 out of 5 stars top notch, 29 Oct. 2013
This excellent demonstration of the administration of justice by the cops in America, and I suspect elsewhere also, clearly showing the impossibility of the impartial and truthful dispensation of judgement, especially, when I find myself emotionally batting for those who have obviously played a corrupt hand! The truth is a strange concept!! Mix these dynamics with high octane action, cruelty and dire poverty and injustice coloured with social inequalities, and the corrupting power of politics, and there is a mixing bowl full of unimaginable highly emotional colour, flavour and spice.

I have never seen such an enjoyable, hard hitting cop program ever. It puts the others to shame!

5.0 out of 5 stars beautifully delicately handled, 10 Oct. 2013

This is, in my mind the most carefully portrayed work of human emotion G Del Toro has attempted thus far. It transcends Pan's Labyrinth but does show eclectic talent when I look at Hellboy(s) and the different genres so well constructed. It is a pure work of genius. The gentleness and awareness he has shown in the making of this film is second to none.

His portrayal of the life led by those at the mercy of poverty such as the orphans in the Spanish Civil War is mighty telling. He gives a glimpse into the culture of the Spaniards of the day, their music and philosophy, poetry and art, as well as the depraved wicked and greedy.

The hopelessness of those children desperate for rescue, cries out for justice and humanity.

There is evil at work right in the midst of the struggles for survival, and the thread of the ghost story winds itself around the dynamics of this mix.

There is the utter tradgedy of the elderly man reciting his latest poem for his dying wife, to help her on her final journey, to the end, this is the true art of tragedy, and oh so beautifully acted by Federico Luppi.

And then there are the struggles of the orphans themselves to be rid of the evil which has blighted their lives, to enable their survival, and the role of the ghost, whose presence is always shimmering around and about the storyline.

There seems to be a balanced mix of love, loyalty, war, violence, tender romance and biting hatred, and poetic justice did prevail, so the film left me with a sense of satisfaction, in that my emotional spectrum was fulfilled.

This is a work of art which belongs with all great tradgedies. I must learn more of his work, and would love to see some more films done in this style.

It goes way OTT with the plot, the creatures, the acting, the set. You will either enjoy the high jinx or not. I found myself chuckling throughout this film. Don't have any expectations with this film, just take it as it comes!

Mix two barmy rich collectors of "biological specimens", the greedy dealer and her very dozy secretary, the detective trying to include a spot of common sense in this mayhem, and the film starts with 3 salvage boatmen trying to make a buck or two from "biological detritus" which emanates from the sewers. This all goes into the mixing pot to make a soggy souffle of a film.

Of course I'll be spoiling nothing by saying the specimens come to life, they've got to! Otherwise there would be no plot. They are deserving of pity, due to being the victims of this crazy gang. But they are very ugly.

There is no scary stuff, but lots of perverted fun!

Plenty of creative new material for the film, and for the first half all went well. Excellent humour, on an unusual plot, ie how are Werewolf bitches different? It was enjoyable and raised laughs with me which happens rarely. Unfortunately the pace and unusual plot does not continue. The story becomes peurile to say the least, with people chasing one another around with a syringe of "cure" reminiscent of the keystone cops. A big disappointment.
I suddenly became bored and slightly annoyed, all the feelings of enjoyable entertainment were snuffed out like a candle!
The creature costume was the worst I have ever seen. It was obvious the director was trying hard to hide the rather more obvious shortcomings of it. There just wasn't enough care taken with it. Stan Winston where are you?
It gets 2 stars for the promising plot, and a good start, what a shame about the rest!

5.0 out of 5 stars Every aspect of a complex subject thoroughly dealt with., 24 Sept. 2013

Society's views of the subject of paranormal research puts man more at his neighbours's throat than any other. Add military inclusion, and you have a hotbed of bother! To produce this film is an act of sheer courage. It deals with the numerous failures of the subjects of the experiment, this is bound to happen, along with unbelievable successes.

The interaction of the subjects among themselves, showing the heroism, treachery, and love, all with the theme of down to earth humour threading alongside, is delicious.

Of course the acting is superb, as can only be expected from such a group of famous actors. The sheer humanistic qualities of the men shine through (not always of the highest moral aspect) and the subject of something within the human psyche rarely looked at in such a profound and unusual way is beautifully displayed.

There does seem to be historical accuracy to the broad story structure of this film, and this adds to its appeal.

The film starts off pulling no punches. It says I'm going to be scary, and dark, and I'll have you guessing as to what exactly is going on. It puts the viewer in the same place as the two poor astronauts who wake up not knowing where they are, who they are, the feeling of complete disorientation is beautifully portrayed, like waking from a nightmare! One thing, however, becomes clear very quickly in the plot, they are going to have to fight very hard for their lives, the monsters don't take long to make their presence felt!

They have the unenviable task of saving the ship, therebye saving themselves, controlling the monsters, and also a strange virus that is the other monster in the equation, this monster actually changes its form, and is most difficult to diagnose. It's a virus which will put all the crew in serious danger.

As the astronauts become more aware of who they are and their role in the running of an enormous starship, the viewer's awareness grows apace. The tension builds with a rush through the ship against time, to the reactor, until the final outcome, which is excellent, and the end scene is not easy to spot before it happens.

The acting is excellent, as are the sets, which have been designed to give the impression of the spacious depths of the ship. It reminds me of "Event Horizon", with the scope of the plot and the horror content, I consider that one of the finest horror sci-fi's I've ever watched.

There is much worth a number of viewings, and I look forward to spending some enjoyable time getting to know this movie better.

1.0 out of 5 stars real violence, 11 Sept. 2013

How anybody can possibly watch somebody having their innards taken out, and eaten in the way this was done without being affected beats me, and then to say it's beautiful?

How can anybody watch a traumatised family try to survive a brutal fathers regime of terror, is beyond me and then to say it's a good plot. With one anomaly piling on another, ie. the introduction of the thing living with the dogs, only introduced at the very end of the film.

The completely maniacal father's attack on the teacher does not follow the plot well either, and seems to be introduced to add gratuitous gore and violence.

The whole mish-mash of plot, very bad acting, (I've often spoken of actors seeming to relish their roles, when doing a good film, but not this one)and poor sets seem to be devoted to the ethic of bloodthirsty chaos.

No doubt there are those that like this, obviously by the reviews, but I wonder just how much fellow feeling and empathy these ones have.

This type of film will always be around to be enjoyed by some, but not me.

5.0 out of 5 stars expertly done, 8 Sept. 2013

An incredible storyline well told, of a psychpathic but very highly intelligent killer, giving subtle clues as to the time and place of his nasty gruesome murders. There are few up to solving the task except for our hero, played by Denzel Washington also in the unenviable situation of being a quadraplegic, and his reluctant sidekick Angelina Jolie. The plight of quadraplegics is sensitively dealt with here, and certainly heightened my awareness of their bad situation.

The sets are dark, because a lot of the crime scenes occur underground or with little light, but the photography is skillful, and nothing is lost, even playing DVD on a small screen television.

The characters are colourful, and real, the acting superb, none more so than the unpleasant, resentful, none too bright cop who's Donahy's boss, and is as scathing to her as Washinton is complimentary. There always has to be one to spoil everything.

The tension ramps up as the plot develops and the victims grow in numbers, until the aims of the killer become very personal indeed,
the characters coming together almost like puppets, for the final confrontation, before the last tense nerve shattering final act, I did feel my eyes coming out of my head! That was a beautifully engineered thrilling ride, if a tad gory.

How many times does one hear a scream before the emotional effect wears off? How many times does one watch people wading from one tree to the other with Mr. Croc down there somewhere, without wondering how the director can make this one a bit different. how many histrionics can one listen to and watch without becoming totally and utterly mind numbingly bored? After 20 minutes I was desperately hoping that damned croc would put them out of their misery. I've no idea whether it did or not, because I could watch no longer. Didn't pay much, but that old adage "You pay for what you get" rings true.

3.0 out of 5 stars better than expected, 6 Sept. 2013

The film is a spoof, and the first thing it takes the mickey out of is itself. The acting is deliberately bad, the sets are awful, but it's obvious from the get go that the actors are thoroughly enjoying their roles! Especially Rod Steiger, he positively relishes being Van Helsing the vampire hunter, and the picture of his bald head sticking out of the bath at the end of the film and delightful German accent, is hilarious.

This is black comedy, on the lines of Mr Sloane, rather than anything Murphyesque. It shows the history of vampire lore, taking to its next funny height by now including black vampires (The Cripps, a notorious black drugs gang). Now, no vampire will bite a black person, they're racially prejudiced so the Cripps get their transformation by having a communal sex session with a beautiful vamp, turned into hidious demon. That did the trick.

Keystone Cops type chases ensue with the vampires chasing to kill, a very low class vampire turned without permission, and on the trail of all is Van Helsing, begging the quarry to slow down, and employing one black gangster to help him destroy the vampires, and this Cripps needs a job!

It's a real family contribution, the great Danny Elfman does the music, his brother or cousin Richard, a close relative anyway does the directing and there is another Elfman on the credits too, although I haven't placed her yet.

It's so low budget as to be off the scale, and I think this movie was done for love rather than big bucks! It'll never make the big time, I just think the cast and crew really enjoyed it, and I do too.
