4.0 out of 5 stars Nice scanner, 25 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this scanner to scan in my documents and 35mm film negative strips and some photos.

It does a good job. Feels solid out of the box and was easy to set up and install the software.

The software works well, I recommend you use "Professional" mode and save your setting presets for later use.

The scanner comes with a Power supply, UK cable, USB 2.0 cable and two film negative accessories, it can do medium format, 35mm and others.

Scan times are reasonable, for example, two strips of 35mm negatives at 48bit colour, 2400 dpi and Digital ICE enabled takes circa 25 minutes (or about 3 minutes per negative image). When scanning, it makes high pitched screeching sounds like R2D2 but this is normal. You can hear a clunk now and then as the imaging switches modes.

The Epson website states this has a MCBF (Mean Cycles Between Failure) of 30,000 cycles. An office grade scanner would typically have about 600,000 MCBF for comparisson. The V700 has MCBF of 100,000 and takes 4 35mm strips per cycle, this V550 takes 2 35mm film strips per cycle (depending on cut length of your film strips, but you can also double up per strip to save scan cycles). Given the cost of this V550, it is reasonable, however, it would be better if there was a way to scan more strips side by side, but the upper lamp is only so wide on the lid.

My workflow for image scanning is to use the Epson software to scan to a folder, then in Lightroom using auto import from folder to speed it up for image processing later.

There also is OCR software, this is useful if you wish to digitize all your documents to save a paper mountain. There is no sheet feeder as this is not an "office" grade product but rather a "consumer" grade product.

If you are looking for the power button, it is on the right hand side near the back. It is a soft button switch and not a rocker/radio switch so it could easily be pressed accidently.
If you find you cannot get Digital ICE to work on all images, you have to select (blue border) each frame thumbnail (click "All" button), then check Digital ICE checkbox.

Epson has good reviews compared to Canon on their scanners, this does not supprise me due to having had the Canon consumer experience, their commitment to specs on the consumer end of the market, is seriously lacking. Epson however, are very much committed to the consumer market on quality and specs.

Why not full stars?

1) 30,000 MCBF compared to 100,000+ on the V700
2) Film negative scans are only 2 strips wide for 35mm
3) No designed in storage for accessories (minor annoyance, a slot underneath to store the removable accessoreis would be handy)
4) Power button is a soft power button easily pressed accidently, a larger recess around the button would help prevent this
5) Film strip accessories is fiddly to use for a lot of film negative scanning

Kaavie Full Metal Ball Head with Quick Release Plate
Kaavie Full Metal Ball Head with Quick Release Plate

3.0 out of 5 stars Great value for money, 19 Jun 2014

This ball head is fantastic value for money (I paid 22.99 fullfilled by Amazon). The maximum load capacity of 8KG which is enough for the majority of people on a tight budget. If you need a higher loading capacity, be prepared to pay over 100 approaching 200 GBP for such a head. For this price and loading capacity it is adequate.

The ball head comes with three (3) major controls, a pair of ball head locking clamp knobs on each side, an arca swiss dovetail plate clamp knob (and associated press safety release button) and panoramic release knob.

So major features are ball head free orientation and portrait slot (but I would recommend you use an Arca compatible L-plate as to keep the camera body balanced on the center of the tripod rather than move weight to the side for portraits), panoramic rotation and camera body/lens plate with safety feature.

The ball head comes with a thread adapter if your tripod legs head is not 3/8", some are 1/4" (for example, the Horizon 8115 that I mount 25x100 binoculars on is 1/4" thread) but most photographic tripods should be 3/8" attachment.

Check out Ex-Pro 1/4'' to 3/8'' Threaded Nuts for Tripod, Light Stands and Digital SLR [5 Pack for appropriate adapters, these are made from STEEL and not Aluminum as others are so should reasonably strong if you need more or to replace this one.

I also have a Hahnel ball head Hahnel BH-40 360 Degree Panoramic Rotation Quick Release Ball Head, however, it is not Arca Swiss compatible so I bought this ball head for arca compatibility with L-plates Emgreat Quick Release L Plate Bracket for Canon Nikon Camera Benro Arca Swiss Tripod Head.

The safety release is just a screw on a spring loaded bar, the Hahnel ball head has a bigger and better safety pin (not just a screw). The Hahnel also has better controls and more solidly built.

Of the two ball heads, I do prefer the Hahnel, but again, it is not Arca compatible, this ball head IS arca compatible so that is why I use it currently.

So why not full stars, well, because

1) Knobs are not as nice as the Hahnel BH-40 (only one knob is required to tighten the ball head on the Hahnel and it is larger for easier grip),
2) Safety pin is just a screw, not as safe as the Hahnel safety pin,
3) Clamp feels wiggly, Hahnel is tighter clamping, more reassuring and less wiggly,
4) Does not feel as strong as the Hahnel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value USB 3.0 hub, 6 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was looking around to replace an old USB 2.0 hub that was starting to fail. The prices other hubs are too expensive for a simple hub.

This hub is reasonably priced (I paid 16.99 + 2.99 delivery) and has enough ports (7 ports).

I do not understand the fascination with bright blue lights on devices, I would prefer RED lights as it does not ruin my night vision when I do astronomy / astrophotography or other light sensitive tasks. They are so bright I have to put tape over them to dull / block out the glare.

One thing I did notice was on my laptop, when I turn it on, this hub will not allow my external usb keyboard to work until the login screen shows (I have to type in a HDD password to boot up my laptop) and this can be annoying sometimes, it is probably because the hub thinks the laptop is on hibernate or some other mode.

Other than these two annoying issues (the bright blue lights and not red lights and the boot up responsiveness of the hub), I am very pleased with this hub and would recommend it.

So far, I have not had any wireless (2.4 ghz) interference as some people seem to have with USB 3.0. However, I do not use wireless devices such as keyboards are mice, they are all wired. My wifi works fine and bluetooth seems to work ok also. If you use cables with a Ferrite choke/bead on them, there should not be any interference.

Why not full stars?

1) Blue lights, I prefer red as I do astrophotography/astronomy that requires night vision
2) Unable to locate firmware updates and firmware update tool
3) Does not work at power on always on a laptop, a firmware update can probably fix this
4) With a bad USB cable, the hub has a habbit of rebooting often, probably a firmware update can fix this

However, I am afraid to say anything incase it blows up.

I have used Seagate well, since, forever, this one I have in a Icy Box USB 3.0 USAP Sata enclosure.

If you want a large partition on Windows (>2TB) you will have to use Guid partition table (GPT) instead of a Master Boot Record (MBR) otherwise you will only get up to 2TB partitions.

It formats to 3.6 TB of free space with NTFS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice and of good quality at a good price, 30 May 2014

This is a very nice L plate bracked, I have it fitted to my Canon 1100D, it is as described and made of good quality.

This L plate is essential for taking portrait photos (also recommended when taking panoramic photographs by using portrait orientation for greater resolution vertically) and it keeps the center weight of the camera over the tripod rather than off to one side as ball head slots do.

This L plate can be adjusted to fit on either side of the camera by simply fitting it the other way, the screw attachment on the base can slide up and down to allow variations in body lengths of different cameras.

I am very happy with this item.

Item is as described and a good price (I paid 9.08 + 1.99 delivery).

It is capable of supporting a decent size camera and reaonable lens but obviously will not take a 800mm monster lens as it rated to take a load capacity of 3.5kg, this is ample enough for consumers at this price range. If you want more load capacity, be prepared to pay between 100 and 200 for such a monopod (the kind professional sports photographers use at events).

The height fully extended is ample for most people unless you are a gunness book of records award holder for the worlds tallest person.

It comes in a carry case with shoulder strap, whether you use this or not (depends if you want another item to carry or not :) ) but also comes with a loop on the top grip which is foam.

The bottom leg section has a rubber foot that can be screwed up to reveal a metal ground spike.

For budget cameras you cannot go wrong with this monopod at all, in fact you may be pleasantly supprised by it's quality given the price.

Ideally a monopod is for long telephoto lenses, to get the best from them, also to use a lens ring that can also allow rotation within the lens ring so you can simply rotate the camera from landscape to portrait.

They arrive in a small resealable plastic bag inside a padded envelope and not the box pictured, however, this really is all you need for packaging so no problem there. The threaded nuts look well made. They screwed into my ball head without resistance and fits snugly flush against the base (they will sit flush once you screw it onto the tripod). There is a flat head screw slots should you wish to remove them later if fitting onto a larger thread.

Very happy with these and value for money (I paid 3.97 for 5).

2.0 out of 5 stars Great value for money BUT not Arca compatible, 8 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This ball head is fantastic value for money (I paid 22.28 from Amazon S.A.R.L). The maximum load capacity of 5KG which is enough for the majority of people on a tight budget. If you need a higher loading capacity, be prepared to pay over 100 approaching 200 GBP for such a head. For this price and loading capacity it is adequate.

The ball head comes with three (3) major controls, a ball head locking clamp knob, an arca swiss dovetail plate clamp knob (and associated press safety release button) and panoramic release knob.

So major features are ball head free orientation and portrait slot (but I would recommend you use an Arca compatible L-plate as to keep the camera body balanced on the center of the tripod rather than move weight to the side for portraits, however, this ballhead is NOT arca compatible, it is wider than arca compatible L-plates), panoramic rotation and camera body/lens plate with safety feature.

I searched the internet for a good ball head on a tight budget, after many reviews including watching reviews on YouTube, I decided on this one. I am very happy with this, it has a good decent weight to it.

You may need a thread adapter if your tripod legs head is not 3/8", some are 1/4" (for example, the Horizon 8115 that I mount 25x100 binoculars on is 1/4" thread) but most photographic tripods should be 3/8" attachment.

Check out Ex-Pro 1/4'' to 3/8'' Threaded Nuts for Tripod, Light Stands and Digital SLR [5 Pack] for appropriate adapters, these are made from STEEL and not Aluminum as others are so should reasonably strong.

NOTE: This ball head is not arca compatible, it is too wide to hold an arca compatible L-plate, which is unfortunate as it is a great little ball head.

This ballhead has a steeper bevel, arca swiss should be about 45 degree angle, this ball head is a steeper angle, also the dovetail on this ball head is 43.4mm wide, an arca swiss is generally 38mm. This ball head has not enough adjustment to tighten to a 38mm arca swiss plate.

If Hahnel make this Arca-Swiss compatible, they have a killer budget product on their hands. It only takes a few angles correct and a few millimeters of tightening. Not much to ask really.

If you need Arca compatiblity (which is something we should all have to get access to a greater range of accessories), Kaavie Full Metal Ball Head with Quick Release Plate and has a similar loading capacity and price.

So why low rating, well, because

1) Not Arca Swiss compatible, to have a head or accessory that is not compatible with todays and future products, screams lock in and ignoring the after market or bad design.
