5.0 out of 5 stars Insight into American Culture, 31 Oct 2013

This operatic libretto, based on a traditional America folk tale, is a fascinating insight into Auden's opinions on America.
The final 'chorale' has some real home truths- no wonder it was not popular in America!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly fascinating, 16 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you are into Charles II, with all that entails, this is the book for you.
A new and interesting approach to how politics and art reflect the power struggles of court life. Lovely prints to illustrate the concepts- the Royal touch for scrofula anyone? Just enough detail and scene setting for those whose history is a little rusty. Cannot be recommended enough!
You can just dip in to it, or read it straight through.
Perfect for the interested reader; also good for history undergraduates and post graduates, as the bibliography can lead you off into your own areas of interest.
BUY THIS BOOK.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Reading, 31 Mar 2013

I really enjoyed this book- more than I expected. I thought it would be an academic, dry tome, but it is really fascinating reading,
especially about the origins of Restoration Theatre (who would have thought that they were originally set up in
real tennis courts?!).

1.0 out of 5 stars Indescribably awful, 4 Mar 2004
I was going to try to start this review with a positive comment, but right now I can’t think of one. The plot is nonexistent. The script is incoherent to the point of actively trying to confuse the audience. The acting is not only wooden, but riddled with woodworm, dry rot and rising damp (Hugo Weaving and Laurence Fishburne aside).
The film shoots itself in the foot at the very start with the same cod philosophy that burdened Reloaded. “Love is just a word,” someone helpfully points out to Keanu. Such metaphysical bulls**t pervades much of the film, reducing the script to a shambolic mess with the philosophical enlightenment of a twiglet. Though perhaps that’s a little unfair. To twiglets.
The bulk of the film consists of the battle for Zion. This is quite possibly the most mind-numbing piece of CG ever to tarnish my retinas, and seems to last for about 3 weeks. Those of you who thought that Jar-Jar Binks was the rock bottom of digital effects will be praying for the gangly-limbed overgrown lobster to walk in and hit you repeatedly in the face with its great flapping ears after watching this scene. It will bore your face off.
The climax of the film, the face off between Neo and Smith, is mind-bendingly stupid and horribly choreographed. The pair fly about all over the place, and the longing for an oversized fly swat to flick them out of the sky and squash them against a window is hard to suppress.
I’m sure the DVD comes with lots of extras, but to be quite frank I don’t give a rats arse about the making of this film. Watching it is quite possibly less fun than hacking off your legs with a pair of nail scissors. I’d rather live in a skip outside Asda for the rest of the decade than watch Revolutions again. Do not buy.
