3.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin, 26 Jan. 2016
This review is from: The Ultimate Collection (Audio CD)
The word "ultimate" means "last or "final", so does this mean she won't be making any more records? The actual music is nice & sung prettily, although I find the Holst arrangement "I vow to thee my country" a bit anachronistic these days. I'm not sure Holst liked having his music "arranged" into a song.

I set it up and it seemed OK. First time I used it, it worked fine for 8 minutes, then just static. Hasn't worked since. I have written to Total AV, requesting a refund.

4.0 out of 5 stars An East German "take" on a French masterpiece, 14 Nov. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very interesting performance by the great East German conductor Rudolf Kempe. He recorded a famous set of Richard Strauss' music with the Dresden State Orchestra, and this has a similar clarity and directness. It was one of a few recordings that he made with Karajan's Berlin Phil, and it may be that the sound is a little too plush for some tastes. The Orchestra featured some top-notch players under Karajan, and it is always gratifying to hear it before it's decline during Abbado's tenure. I'm not sure that I would recommend this above Colin Davis, but it's certainly worth investigating.

4.0 out of 5 stars Toscanini on top form, 12 Oct. 2015

I bought this for L'Italiana in Algeri. In the big Sony boxed set of Toscanini recordings, the first two bars are missing. Here they are complete. This was typical Toscanini repertoire, bracing, unsentimental readings, perhaps a little hard-driven, but superbly well played. The recordings are rather "boxy" by today's standards, but I doubt if we shall hear music-making like this again.

This repertoire was largely unfamiliar to me, but this is lovely music, superbly performed. Highly recommended.

Beethoven: 9 Symphonies

4.0 out of 5 stars A modern take on Beethoven, 12 Oct. 2015

Scherchen was a fairly objective conductor, and Beethoven's nine benefit from this approach. The early 50s mono recordings are a bit restricted, but the orchestras (the Vienna State Opera, and Beecham's Royal Philharmonic) play very well, the RPO in particular. This is non-showy Beethoven, and all the better for it. Over 60 years old, but still worth a listen.

Melodies; Ives: Songs / Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau
Melodies; Ives: Songs / Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau
Offered by Music-Finder
Price: £27.92

5.0 out of 5 stars A great baritone in unusual repertoire, 12 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Fischer-Dieskau rarely sang in French or English, as he felt that these languages were difficult for non-native singers. However, the French songs from 1959 are delightful. The Ives illustrates what he means about the language. Luckily three songs are to German texts, and where he affects a slight American drawl, the effect is quite authentic. "Tom sails away", one of Ives' responses to World War 1, is especially moving.

5.0 out of 5 stars It takes some getting used to, but..., 12 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is very tough music, but if you like Modernism in music, then Xenakis fits the bill. His uncompromising musical style has a real sense of high drama & integrity, reflecting the complexities of modern society. Since the 1950s, he followed his own path, refusing to compromise or sell out for cheap popularity.

Saint-Saens: Symphony No 3. Franck: Le Chasseur Maudit. Poulenc: Concerto for Organ, Strings and Timpani

4.0 out of 5 stars First-rate Franck from 1962, 12 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this for the "Chasseur Maudit, a cracking performance. The Poulenc is good, but the 3rd Symphony (Saint-Saens) suffers from distortion in the loudest passages, hence only 4 stars, but buy this for the Franck.
