Cromwell continues his exploration into the distorted reporting that plagues our so called 'liberal' media. If you have read his previous co-authorship of Guardians of Power: The Myth of the Liberal Media, you will recognise his major theme in this book. That of the reasons for challenging the portrayals of our media as being on the side of good, in the defence of truth and of safeguarding our rights; holding our elites to account is their claim. An interesting element of this book is the author's early questioning of accepted norms; his familial background, schooling and employment all added to his emerging rejection of the media formula that presented We as Right and Others as Wrong.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cerebral comedy at its best, 18 Feb 2011

Found this series on Catch Up TV over the Christmas holidays and ran through all 3 series as a comedy fever gripped me. Seeing the boxed set on offer re-ignited that feverish pleasure and I immediately keyed in my order. Simply the finest comedy series I've watched for a long time. There are insufficient superlatives to fully describe the superb writing and acting contained in each episode. Pure addictive viewing that goes far,far beyond what has gone before.

This review is from: Shock Doctrine [DVD] [2009] (DVD)
Takes the core elements of Naomi Kleins book and vividly illustrates their major impacts on the lives of ordinary people in countries all over the world. How rich political and corporate elites benefit from natural and man-made disasters to push through an economic ideology that ensures power and wealth remains in the hands of the few in each society. Politics has become the handmaiden of greed and power, of corporate interests. The theme that emerges as the narrative unfolds is that disaster capitalism can be challenged, as we become aware of a different history to that which we are expected to docilely accept

5.0 out of 5 stars Pilger at his usual best, 14 Jan 2011

A most powerful and disturbing eye-opener into the politics of deceit. Political elites and their subordinate media suppress the horrific realities of what is done in our name. Pilger, one of the few genuine investigative reporters, has for decades produced documentaries, books and articles that challenge the prevailing orthodoxies. This DVD has Pilger at his best, allowing the 'Unknown' to become known; allowing the normally silenced to be heard. The early scenes of a murderous attack on simple figures in a landscape and the honest words of a soldier that explain what was found amongst the human wreckage should anger all who watch what could have been seen as a video game, and probably was, by the perpetrators of the horror. A must see for all who question and rail against the machine we call democratic government.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime cinema, 6 May 2010

Having enjoyed the books, I was unsure as to what I would see on the big screen having been disappointed by previous crossovers from the page to the moving image. I was drawn in from the opening scenes which matched those in my memory of the pages and Salander exploded into reality surpassing my expectations of her imagery from the page. I eagerly await the two films that will complete the millenium triology.

However well written and researched, any book dealing with the tactical movements of forces on the battlefield requires detailed maps so as to enable the reader to fully visualise the narrative progression of the battle. "The Maps of Gettysburg" provide the reader/student with the ability to place the opposing forces within the textual context and fully appreciate the narrative. This book is a rich enabler for any student of the battle and a great adjunct to other books dealing with the battle.
