Wanting
Wanting
Price: £3.79

5.0 out of 5 stars Complex exploration of savagery, civilization and human desire, 11 April 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Wanting (Kindle Edition)
Not an easy read but worth persevering as the narrative switches from the Victorian heroes of Dickens, Franklin and the rumoured cannibalism at his end and the earlier colony of Van Diemans land in which the attempts to civilise the Aborigines is both ludicrous and horrific. Desire, it's repression and enactment, are the drivers of all mankind - be they black or white. Only Matthinna the adopted black child is innocent in her misunderstood vitality which so-called civilisation corrupts and destroys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Focused, exploratory, mesmerizing journey through grief., 12 Mar. 2015

This review is from: H is for Hawk (Kindle Edition)
You don't need to be interested in hawks to read this non-fiction account of loss. It's grief wrenched from within when life must continue yet its always grappling, creating a dialogue with the loss of a loved one. An emotional expedition into the boundaries that confine and articulate our humanity. Also a lesson in training a goshawk.

Mourning Ruby
Mourning Ruby
Price: £3.95

3.0 out of 5 stars Haunting and confusing., 20 Jan. 2015
This review is from: Mourning Ruby (Kindle Edition)
An experimental novel that plays with the lost stories of two people offering possibilities, imagined, false, constructed against the one reality of a beloved child's death. Disjointed and deliberately so, a choppy read which is not imaginatively satisfying. Liked other Dunmore novels more.

The Comfort Of Strangers
The Comfort Of Strangers
Price: £5.49

3.0 out of 5 stars Dark exploration into human depravity, 26 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A slow process of entrapment keeps the novel moving by describing how the victims are oblivious to their stalker, boredom rather than naivety bring Colin and Mary to the terrible final act. A tense, controlled novel that explore one facet of sexual fetishism. Ultimately unpleasant but brilliant.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely old fashioned story like they used to be!, 25 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Read this as I remembered the BBC children's version from about thirty years ago. The Children of Green Knowe is the better story, part ghost part folk tale, with the magical house and the deeply wise Mrs Oldknowe at its heart. The River story is fanciful rather than mythical and creaky in terms of strange encounters - hermit bus driver, winged horses and a weird tree/giant that joins the circus! A good antidote to techy -driven Disney stuff for children.

3.0 out of 5 stars Contrived plot but worth a quick read., 10 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Creaky plot that has the kernel of a tense human predicament in it but it is clumsily handled. The writing descends into Mills And Boon metaphors at times and fails to create a sense of real anguish and conflict. A mistake to give the heroine a titled husband as the final consolation!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read especially this year of W W 1 centenary, 6 July 2014

This review is from: Wake (Kindle Edition)
How the different lives of three sets of women are separated by class and circumstance but ultimately unified in loss is expertly woven by this first time novelist. The underlying message is that of one of its traumatized survivors "There are no winners in war. War is the only winner."

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Austen but well written, 2 Jun. 2014

A good read!

This lacks the wit and wry understanding of the original. Servant s lives are not as dramatic as those of their mistresses but this has a good sub plot- even straying into the existence of gay farm hands and clandestine trouser down romps in the wilderness.

No hard rubbing! Just wipe it on and polish it off. We have a period house with brass lamps and fire furniture and it used to take a whole day but this is magic.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT READ, 11 Mar. 2014

Gripping story telling, perhaps longer than needed in the show ing of mother-daughter mirrored lives. Wonderfully detailed creation of life in a courtesan house that is focused on emotional survival rather than the sex.
