4.0 out of 5 stars Useful and value for money, 24 Nov. 2014

This is a very good piece of kit. It would probably be better to have bought one with adjustable legs but that is minor. It allows you to work comfortably in a range of situations. I mostly use it in bed for both work and watching DVD. The positions you can adjust it to are very useful. It seems to be well-made but the drawer tended to stick a bit at first. It arrived in excellent condition. It is sturdy and I think it will be in service for a very long time. In my view it gives value for money.

The Most Important Thing: Uncommon Sense for the Thoughtful Investor: Uncommon Sense for Thoughtful Investors (Columbia Business School Publishing)

5.0 out of 5 stars A really useful book, 17 Nov. 2014
This book is short but not intended to be read quickly. Take your time and digest the philosophy. Specifically what Marks offers is the reasoning behind the principles of value investing. Each point is given the 'most important thing' treatment and then at the end he brings it all together because there is no formula, there is no algorithm, there is no quick way to become a thoughtful investor. What you will know is the importance of risk control, what an intelligent contrarian does and why, the reason for being a defensive investor, being an 'I don't know' investor who aims to minimize losses in case it all turns bad. And much more. I agree with the reviewer who says it is a good book to come to after you've made some mistakes but I hope that younger investors would be prepared to learn from the fact that all the rest of us have made mistakes that they can avoid if they put in the work required to master these principles. Beginning here is not a bad idea. Investing well isn't easy so don't look for an easy book: there aren't any good ones. This has almost no maths in it but if you are daunted by any of the material, Khan Academy has some excellent playlists on finance and capital markets. www.khanacademy.org. (It's free!)

5.0 out of 5 stars From the Golden Era: Don't miss it!, 17 Nov. 2014

This review is from: Song Book [Re-Issue] (Audio CD)
This is heavenly. The periods when Hans Gillesberger and then Uwe Christian Harrer were artistic directors comprise, in my not very qualified view, the golden era of the Vienna Boys' Choir. The technical ability of the soloists featured here is quite exceptional and the repertoire demanding. If you have the chance to collect archive recordings, don't leave this one out. There has been nothing like it since.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eyes wide shut (sometimes), 17 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have been collecting the entire set of Waking the Dead and have watched them very close together so have a sense of the changes that the series has undergone. Other reviewers refer to the darkness of the series and this is a good word but it doesn't convey all of the change. I have the impression that the violence has become much more explicit. The reconstructions in the lab are intercut with graphic and lingering flashbacks. I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing but it did lead me to watch some of this with my eyes shut. As some of the cases involve extensive torture this can be very uncomfortable. I still give this five stars and series nine will be on its way to me soon, but maybe some viewers would appreciate the cautionary note. And like some of the other reviewers I was also moved to tears more than once. It is compelling and retains its strong moral condemnation of violent crime. There is nothing salacious or voyeuristic about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite possibly this is the best., 7 Oct. 2014

This compilation of Libera's best songs is outstanding. If you are looking for just one album this is excellent value for money and explores the whole range of Libera's repertoire. It is the only disc I have purchased since Angel Voices when it was first released. They were good then but they are in a different league now. If you have been collecting discs over time then the overlap could be a problem but I think the target market is people like me: heard them, liked them, wanted my own copy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chilling still, 8 Jan. 2014

If you can get past the fact that child actors of the time were much inferior to the ones we see now, then this is still a good series. For those of us able to remember seeing it when it first came out there is plenty to remind us of why it was a bit scary. Less so than Children of the Stones but definitely not cosy. And the great thing was that this was children's television that didn't give us the patronizing "happily ever after" resolution we were accustomed to. I'm afraid modern children will find the special effects so hilarious that they'll miss the genuinely spooky atmosphere but it is worth a try. I'm pleased to have been able to buy the series and revisit Clifton House.

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment, 8 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Could the 80s really have been this beige? Could the wonderful Patricia Hodge really have worn the Princess Di wardrobe and expressed all emotion by adjusting the degree to which her mouth hung open? Not that the supporting cast is much better. In the first episode the most animated character is the cat. (Nothing horrible happens to the cat, just in case anyone was worried.)

The biggest difficulty with watching this now is the shift in values that make the tolerance of the drunken, violent behavior of one man very jarring. We watch an alleged investigator unable to defend herself with a well-placed knee to the groin or slap down the impertinent groping and kissing of a complete stranger. We are expected to sympathize with the murderer. As a historical curiosity this might be an interesting purchase but it has aged very badly. (Miranda's mother would have known just what to do to them!)

I'm not sure I'm even going to make it through the whole series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great reissue, 9 Nov. 2013

This review is from: Baroque Recorder Music (Audio CD)
This CD is a reissue of a recording made in the 1980s. I loved the vinyl and hearing it again on CD it is every bit as lovely as I remember. This quartet really made recorder music come alive and the arrangements demonstrate that even the highest recorders can be lyrical. Only four stars because the programme was a little too homogeneous but that is purely a matter of taste and no reflection on the quality of the music.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wrong choir, 7 Aug. 2013

This CD is quite possibly very beautiful but it is sung by the Boys Choir of the Vienna Woods not the Vienna Boys' Choir. Thanks for the customer image as you can see quite clearly on the cover who is performing.

2.0 out of 5 stars An insult to historically literate readers, 13 Dec. 2012
The title of the book suggests that the writer would know quite a lot about the captivity of the Romanovs and their final prison. Without spoiling the plot I have to report that he knew nothing or assumed that the readers would know anything of the actual conditions under which they were held in those last days and the events of the night of their murder. For anyone who knows the history this book is absurd. If curious, borrow it from the library and buy Helen Rappaport's account of this tragic story instead.
