First of all, I am not in the habit of writing reviews for business-related books and please believe me when I say as the former Director of Custom Corporate Executive Education at London Business School and the current Chief External Officer a Manchester Business School - I have read more than my fair share of business-related and 'How do we fix things' type of books. This one is truly different. If you have wondered why a great country like Great Britain (and as a dual Canadian/British citizen that is a big statement on my part to start with!) cannot be fixed and fixed quickly order this book! Digby Jones (and I declare that I have heard him speak and also met him briefly!) is the type of person that we all 'wish' would run for high office! He is right to state that without business there would be no government, as business is the only means by which taxation is generated, and carefully places business interests in a place that only a non-party aligned individual can ever place it! Which is where it belongs! Business is good for us as individuals and good for Great Britain. Read this book if only to remind yourself that there are people who have worked in the commercial sector and within the highest levels of central government who really do care about our collective future!

Future Files: A Brief History of the Next 50 Years
Future Files: A Brief History of the Next 50 Years
by Richard Watson
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.79

5.0 out of 5 stars Future is bright, the future is..., 28 Jan 2011
I am not in the habit of writing reviews (who has the time?!) but this book really deserves to be applauded and to get wider coverage. Like many people who wonder, 'What next?!' I was searching for an insightful perspective and found it. The author, Richard Watson, has taken a subject that just about anybody can write. The difference is that he has provided a view of the future with credibility by linking it with the past and the present with relevant and referenced details. If you want to know what the future is 'probably' going to look like - this is the book for you. You will not be disappointed and the Trends and Technology Timeline graphic is worth the price of admission on its' own.

1.0 out of 5 stars Missing the point and the Gorilla!, 4 Dec 2009
This book is a complete waste of money and just another example of 'experts' jumping onto the work of Professor Robert Cialdini. If you want to know about insights look to Mr Borg or Mr Cialdini - not this infant school offering! Oh by the way Mr Wiseman, you have given away the whole point of the video clip with your self-defeating book title.

Yes! 50 Secrets from the Science of Persuasion

5.0 out of 5 stars Isn't it all about getting to 'Yes!'?!, 30 Dec 2007
I work in professional services where the difference between winning a new client and losing an existing client is very often down to the small things like being more memorable in the customer's eyes. Yes! brings all of the important, and sometimes just small, things to the surface and offers them in a concise, crisp and fun to read book. Anyone who is looking for an edge in business does not need to attend one of the myriad of 'Become a success overnight!' courses currently on offer from many different sources but just to start by investing in this very useful book and not lose the opportunity to get an insight into those things that work! Not just because the author's say so but because research and scientific rigour has proven the approach as being superior!

Great topic, useful timing and extremely useful material. Thank you author's for sharing your knowledge and expertise with us!

Influence: Psychology of Persuasion
Influence: Psychology of Persuasion

5.0 out of 5 stars Invest in Influence, 6 Jun 2005
I first read an excerpt of Dr Cialdini's book in a Harvard Business Review article and it was one of the few times I actually bought the book on the same day. The six universal principles of influence and persuasion are superb in their brevity and ability to work in a wide variety of situations. With Dr Cialdini backing up his writings with 50 years of social science research (not to mention his own 3 year investment of time to learn the trade secrets of many organisations, both private sector and public sector) it makes learning and using the principles of persuasion systematic and not dependant on being 'a born sales person or natural influencer'. A fantastic read with plenty of anecdotes (backed up by research) and uses. If you buy one book on the subject of Influence and Persuasion - make it this one!. Also, for reader's interest the book has been translated into a two-day workshop on how to best utilise the 6 principles of influence and persuasion and are run by Dr Cialdini's outfit called Influence At Work - they have a US and UK presence. Good reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Getting the 'inside track' about presentations, 15 April 2005
I do alot of public speaking and thought I knew about the tips, techniques and strategies that can make for a successful event. This book is the one-stop shop in terms of covering all the important elements of giving a presentation along with some of the things we all think about but nobody has ever written about, i.e. the annoying way that some presenters pull the paper backing off of acetates!!
If you are a seasoned presenter or tasked with doing your first stand up presentation, you will not be disappointed in this publication. It is one of the few books I have purchased which fits into the category of an 'investment' in improving my performance versus something that was nice to have read and then goes onto the shelf never to be referred to again. Great stuff.
