Michael Raucheisen - The Man at the Piano
Michael Raucheisen - The Man at the Piano
Offered by Music-Shop
Price: 68.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Priceless souvenirs, 19 Mar 2014
I knew about Raucheisen's recordings, but I had no idea that this set was available and had only come across a few discs on other labels by the singers who became especially well-known in the post-war world such as Hotter and Schwarzkopf. On a visit to Berlin (of all places) I found brand-new copies of a few of the individual discs in this collection very cheap in a used book and CD store. On talking to the owner I discovered that she had many more in cardboard boxes in the stock room and she was very keen to have me take them away - and after about 90 minutes rummaging I had secured the whole set of 66 discs at a total price of about $45.00! Why is the set so very special? First of all, the repertoire covered includes a great many lieder that are not easily found on disc. Secondly, the singers are an extraordinary bunch who offer insights into a now-extinct tradition that, faults and all, make us realize how much individuality and interpretation of text have been diluted by today. Finally, the vast majority of these recordings were made during the Second World War, and there are wonderful performances set down as late as February and March 1945 with total defeat in Total War only a few weeks in the future. If you are familiar with historic recordings you will find the quality of the sound remarkably good, although Ward Marston would have improved things considerably, and any technical faults can be forgiven for the invaluable gifts offered.

This review is from: Britten in Pictures (Paperback)
Photos and commentary add up to a new biography. Although many of the photos are familiar, there are some great rarities here which I have enjoyed seeing.

Varady was one of the great unsung artists of her time outside of Central Europe. Her voice, sense of style, histrionic abilities, and versatility were astonishing. What an Aida she gives us!
