5.0 out of 5 stars Practical and effective - a good book to read and try out for yourself!, 19 Jun 2014
Danu Forest’s The Druid Shaman is a lovely book, and a great addition to the Pagan Portals series. As part of this series, it offers a brief introduction to a subject, which then allows the reader to follow further down the path should they so choose.

Danu’s writing is clear, friendly, and easy to understand. It is obvious that she cares a great deal about the land upon which she lives, the spirits of place and the work that she does. The exercises provided are a real boon to this informative book, offering experiential rather than just intellectual stimulation. In particular, I loved her meditation that adopts the pose of the figure in the Gundestrup cup, which I now use in my own daily practice.

Druid Shaman is a brilliant addition to any Druid’s collection of Druid and Pagan writings. It will appeal to a larger audience as well, offering insight into the traditions both modern and ancient of the British Isles. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good, and new approach to a popular subject!, 11 Jun 2014
Morgan's words were refreshing, bringing new life into a subject that has such a broad spectrum. Her personal anecdotes of her dealings with the Fair Folk are a lovely juxtaposition to the teachings available within the book. Well written and recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging and supportive, 9 Jan 2014
This review is from: Facing the Darkness (Paperback)
Cat Treadwell's Facing the Darkness is a brilliant little book, filled with wisdom in insight into what is often neglected in our society. When one suffers from grief, depression, anger, hurt or regret they are often pushed to the side, furthering their condition and reinforcing it.

Facing the Darkness allows the reader the opportunity to really engage with whatever it is that they are feeling, facing it and opening up paths through until they have journeyed to the other side of their situation. It is not a book about light and positive thoughts - it engages deeply and empathetically with the reader, knowing that the darkness is not something to be feared. Each and every one shares in the darkness, which is but another aspect of our very own selves, something to be honoured for what it is and what it can teach us. We do not seek to rid ourselves of our demons, but to work with them, to better understand them and thereby giving the reins of control back into our own hands.

Cat provides exercises and meditations, spellwork and just plain good advice in this book. She speaks as one who has been there, who has faced her demons and who continues to face them bravely, with honour. Writing from a place of deep perspective, the book is very readable whatever your situation. She has summarised each section into short chapters, with practical advice at the end of each, so that even if you do not feel you are able to read a lengthy tome, you can still benefit greatly from these little nuggets of wisdom, experience and insight.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sacred Journey worth making!, 10 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Avalon Within is a rare gem in the world of neo-pagan women's mystery traditions. The author is well versed in the mythic lore of Avalon and her love of it shines throughout.

With a deep historical understanding and an intelligence based around psychology, this book takes the reader on a journey through the five Stations of Avalon leading to a state of discovery of the true self - the unveiling of human potential through the mists of time, the burdens of life and the remembrance of the soul's purpose. Each Station leads one deeper into the tradition and into their own psyche, releasing the dross and allowing the pilgrim to achieve their full potential, without all the New Age speak that abounds around such voyages of self-discovery. Indeed, this book and the subsequent Sisterhood of Avalon tradition stand out from all other books and traditions of self-discovery and healing simply by the three aims that guide the reader deeper - service to the self, service to the Sisterhood and service to the gods. This service is what makes it real and worthy, setting it apart from the self-indulgent tendencies of books in a similar vein.

The gods are in the details, and this book is full of them. With inner-journey meditations (immrama), self-reflective questions, trance postures and more the wisdom of Avalon is something to truly be experienced rather than simply read about. It is in the doing that we are made.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Avalon and the Goddess/es, to those who need healing and to those who wish to realise their true potential. Prepare yourselves to go deep into the heart of Avalon to rediscover your soul, your shadow self and your own inner truth. It's a journey worth making.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Eye Opener, 24 Oct 2013
Elen Sentier's Celtic Chakras intrigued me - I have worked with the Eastern tradition of chakras for many years, and seeing this interpretation of the concept was refreshing and interesting. I really liked the spiral concept of chakra energy, radiating from the heart centre that reflects the spiral so common a Celtic motif. It also reflected some of the Tantric teachings of flow, how it moves up and through and then back and down, as opposed to movement from the base chakra to the crown only. As a Pagan Portals book from Moon Books, it is a good, short introduction to the Celtic Chakras, which can be further explored on one's own. I look forward to Sentier's other works! - Joanna van der Hoeven, author of Zen Druidry

Elen Sentier's Elen of the Ways is a book full of information on this elusive antlered goddess. She provides us with background and history as well as practical exercises to journey to meet with Her, showing us this native deity in all Her glory. It deepens our connection to the land, and allows us to know our wilder selves, oftentimes hidden deep within. It breaks down the perceived boundaries between the worlds, and brings you up close and personal with this goddess of the boreal forest. She is Within and She is Without - take your first steps upon the path to meeting Her, follow Her trods, the forest beckons... - Joanna van der Hoeven, author of Zen Druidry

Starcat's Corner: Essays on Pagan Living
Starcat's Corner: Essays on Pagan Living
by N. Starcat Shields) Nikki Shields
Edition: Paperback
Price: 9.01

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely book to inspire you!, 13 Jun 2013
Starcat's Corner: Essays on Pagan Living is a great little book. Based on small essays written over the years, each one is based around a festival of the year. Within the essays are helpful hints, great practical information and things to try. This book really does what it says on the tin - bringing a more "pagan" feel into your everyday life.

Each short essay is very easily digestible and well-written. If you are pressed for time, then this is the perfect book for you. You can read an essay or two and then come back to it without fear of "losing the thread" so to speak. The author is clear and concise, and the writing is from the heart.

A great addition to the pagan's bookshelf!

Druidry and the Ancestors: Finding our place in our own history
Druidry and the Ancestors: Finding our place in our own history

5.0 out of 5 stars An insightful look into the ancestors, 11 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an inspired book, written by an author whose passion and honesty shines through the pages. Too often in Druidry, we look to and call upon the ancestors, those of blood, of tradition and of place, without really knowing exactly what it is that we are doing, or why we are doing it. This book gives us an in depth and insightful look at our ancestors, all our ancestors, including our future ancestors. This is a concept which I think for pagans is perhaps the most important - we too will one day be ancestors. By delving into the past we can guide ourselves towards the future with an awareness of who we are as spiritual beings.

Not too academic, not too flowery - simple, honest and forthright writing with a heartfelt love for Druidry is what makes this book stand out. I highly recommend it on every Druid's bookshelf or Kindle.

4.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide to journey to the dark night of the soul, and return again, 8 Jun 2012
Jane Meredith uses the myths and stories of Inanna, Persephone and Psyche to weave a magical journey into the depths of the darkest part of our souls, creating a soul map that enables one not only to seek the depths but to return once again into life, to integrate wholly the experience. Whether the journey to the Dark Goddess is taken willingly or not, the techniques described in detail allow the reader to find their feet and take their own steps to meet with Her. Written plainly and to the point with personal anecdotes woven throughout, Jane Meredith's style is easy to read and empathise with. Her understanding and interpretation of the classical and ancient myths resonates deep within the soul, and brings them to life once again. An inspiring read.
