Easy Riders, Raging Bulls: How the Sex-drugs-and Rock 'n' Roll Generation Changed Hollywood
Easy Riders, Raging Bulls: How the Sex-drugs-and Rock 'n' Roll Generation Changed Hollywood
by Peter Biskind
Edition: Paperback
Price: 9.09

5.0 out of 5 stars The "Other" Hollywood, 11 July 2012
This is a great book which opens the door on the "other" Hollywood we glean little about from all the phony PR clips on TV etc etc. Biskind is an insider, whose access to movie sets and one-on-one interviews over decades elevates him beyond the norm. His starting point is the sea change in Hollywood's business practice following the breakout indie movie, Easy Rider. After it, the entire Hollywood boardroom-movie game plan changed and Biskind's recounting of the evolutionary indie surge is rivetting.

Fifty Fingers: New Poems from the Days
Fifty Fingers: New Poems from the Days
by Michael Feeney Callan
Edition: Paperback
Price: 5.30

5.0 out of 5 stars More new poetry, please!, 11 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The poems in this volume cover a wide array of travels and relfections on life, loss, love, family, faith and fantasy by an author known for his biographies (Robert Redford, Anthony Hopkins, etc). The "fifty fingers" refers to our capacity to experience and affect during our lifetimes. Not enough new poetry published, so a salute to the publisher, too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Warning: Not Complete!, 11 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Of course I will give Larkin 5 stars any day. His poetry uniquely captures what it is to be human, British and breathing in the pessimistic 20th century. Just a really class act. But many of his great love poems ("Marriages", "The Dance", "Love Again") aren't here. There is an earlier, complete edition with the same title readers should seek out. You let us down, Faber!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nuance and note perfect throughout!, 26 May 2012
This review is from: Carmen - Fantasie (Audio CD)
This is a real feast for Muter lovers and for Carmen lovers. Throughout the playing is sensitive and as always with her, maximizes nuance. The "Zigunerweisen" is especially memorable. Recording is crisp and plays beautifully on my four-speaker surround. Loved every glorious second of it.

Sean Connery
Sean Connery
by John Parker
Edition: Hardcover

1.0 out of 5 stars Derivative, 26 May 2012
This review is from: Sean Connery (Hardcover)
This is a derivative biography which relies heavily on primary source research in previously published substantial works on Connery. It's a disappointing read and reveals its weakness in its sources. Check out Andrew Yule and Michael Feeney Callan's highly regarded and original works on Connery for proper career and personality analysis based on first hand research.

The Ice Storm
The Ice Storm
by Rick Moody
Edition: Paperback
Price: 7.27

3.0 out of 5 stars Among Moody's Best ... but Not Quite, 26 May 2012
This review is from: The Ice Storm (Paperback)
I love Rick's writing, but I also note his tendency for verbosity. This is his most nostalgic and personal story, with deeply insightful and moving moments flowing like a river. Ang Lee's movie did it amazing justice. Read, see and judge.

Sean Connery
Sean Connery
by Michael Feeney Callan
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars The real Sean Connery, 26 May 2012
This review is from: Sean Connery (Hardcover)
A previous reviewer gives one star .... but he's reviewing the postal service ... and that's just not right. This book is the only fully researched Connery bio out there in the market, with the most thorough interviews with Connery and his family (brother Neil). Still on the shelves after 30 years ... which says it all. Buy it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary, 26 May 2012
Rubenstein is in his eighties for these performances, filmed in Amsterdam in the early 1970s. Of all the DVD versions available, this is without doubt the most moving and stirring (especially the Beeethoven) - and is really memorable on account of superb acoustics in the theatre. A classic "keeper" for Rubenstein fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accurate. Complete. Insightful., 26 May 2012
A good place to start evaluating a biography is the notes and acknowledgements ... so a little prior research helps to sort out the rubbish from the properly researched. This book is the real thing, thoroughly researched, and the only title Harris authorised ... then (in his customary publicity-craving way - re-authorised. The book is based on hundreds of hours of interviews with the actor and is unmatched in its scope and insight.

The Little Wax Doll

5.0 out of 5 stars Work of Forgotten Genius, 25 May 2012

This review is from: The Little Wax Doll (Paperback)
Norah Lofts deserves great credit for a huge body of fine work spanning 50 years. Among her great Hitchcockian thrillers is this gem, made into a movie with Jona Fontaine. Charming, seductive, memorable. Highly recommended.
