I am collecting all 21 of the Sharpe's Books. The illustration provided is of an 18 book set, the description is of a 16 book set but the set received was of a 14 book set with two additional books (Sharpe's Regiment and Sharpe's Waterloo) of a different edition/publication and also different size and thus do not match the other books provided. Although all are in mint condition, the two titles from the more recent print run are useless to me. I have paid up front for the books and feel cheated that I didn't receive a matching set.

Delivered on time, in suitable plastic packaging to retain moisture in the clay. The clay is now lining the hole I dug for a pond and is retaining water. Job done!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story...... Poor format!, 3 Oct 2013

This review is from: Gunshots (Paperback)
I have read every thing that Michael Connolly has written to date and actually collected each title in Soft back, latter to convert my collection into hardback versions. Therefore a new story from a favourite author was a welcome development. However on receipt of the book, I was initially surprised at the format.... it neither matched the soft back nor hard back versions produced by Orion Books Ltd. On checking the publishers, I find that it was published by New Vision Books in 2013 and printed in the UK by Amazon .co.uk.

Reading, is one of my greatest pleasures, I savour the pleasure of a well crafted story, although strangely the format of the book influences the level of enjoyment for me. I have for example discovered that I do not enjoy the experience of reading from a Kindle as much as from a book, be it soft back or hard back... the latter being my favourite. As a teacher of teenage children with reading difficulties for 30 years, I am well aware that the presentation and format of print markedly affects readability.

The format of 'Gunshot' is unusual for fiction, being actually similar to many text books in size, format and paper quality. Another factor that affects the reading experience is the print size and margin widths. The print size used for 'Gunshot' matches that used for hardback books, but the margin widths match those used for soft back books. Although there is nothing intrinsically wrong with this, it leads to too much print on a page for easy reading and assimilation of content . It is not only adolescents with reading difficulties that benefit from print presented at optimum size and distribution; everyone benefits from well presented print.

It is not only the format of the print that affected my enjoyment of the book; the hardback format is the easiest to handle, soft backs, although smaller and thus perhaps lass cumbersome, actually have problems of splitting at the spine....... particularly as there is a temptation for the reader to bend the book right open to hold it in one hand..... the resultant splitting and consequential loss of pages being the bane of readers at holiday destination hotels;-) New Vision Publishers has attempted to address this with a tall format giving rise to a thinner book, less prone to splitting. I suspect the size will closely match the size of the original Kindle. Unfortunately, unlike a Kindle, the format leads to a floppy book that feels uncomfortable to hold and its 'floppy' quality once again leads to easy splitting at the spine.

Now to the actual story....... unsurprisingly, Connelly has written a well crafted and researched story, introducing new main characters and venues .... I see it is Book 1 of Fidelis ad Mortem. I welcome this move away from well known and 'loved' characters and enjoyed the story but on the down side the proof reading of the story was poor with a number of typos and other errors creeping through.

Although I accept it is unlikely to happen, I would welcome a return to the standards insisted on by the previous publishers. At present the production seriously impinged on my enjoyment of the story and brings into doubt whether I will bother to purchase the follow up stories.

3.0 out of 5 stars Chavenage Bat Box Review, 8 Feb 2013

Moderately cheap. Well built from softwood, with good finish but In the long term softwood will rot easily and need to be replaced. Hardwood is more expensive but longer lasting. Wood-Crete boxes are even better but very expensive. There are cheaper soft wood boxes on the market.
Also there is no way to monitor usage by bats without taking the box appart. When the placement is part of a large group of bat boxes as intended, this will be too time consuming for the Licenced Bat Workers undertaking the survey. Therefore we didnt proceed with purchasing the 100 boxes required for the scheme. However on the plus side, I personally modified this Chavenage Bat Box by removing the two screws holding the front bottom in place. This allows the front to be swung open for examination of the interior without having to dismantle the box or to have to take it down. I then fitted two brass hook and eye fastenings to hold the front shut. This box has been errected at a site where a single box was needed.

This latest offering from BCT is dissapointing, the presentation is messy with much stating of the obvious, I think they have missed a chance to make a real difference for bats. Perhaps they were trying to influence Landscape Architects and lost site of appealing to Bat Workers. It might be leveled at me that Bat Workers are already on the side of bats while Landscape Architects are not necessarily bat friendly at all.......... still I'm not keen on the book.
