5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Triple Bill, 23 Dec 2013

I already own and have reviewed Meet Joe Black [DVD] [1999] but as always is the way I wanted the other 2 films in this set so now have a double of MJB.At the time it was cheaper to buy the boxset rather than the 2 films individually.

I can't be the only person who ends up with doubles this way can I?

No matter,MJB is an exceptional collaboration between Sir Anthony and Brad Pitt. The interplay between them is so natural and unforced.
Pitt is the Grim Reaper come to claim the life of Hopkins, but dallies with Hopkins daughter in exchange for a few more precious days of his life.

By contrast,Pitts character in Legends Of The Fall is self-destructive and savage and he totally dominates the film,no mean feat when Hopkins shares top billing.
This is equally as good as MJB but is more sprawling and with plenty of excellent supporting actors right down to the very small roles.

In my opinion the least of the films is The Devil's Own,but not by much.
It is much more action orentated and has its feet firmly on the ground, dealing with the conflict between Pitts IRA terrorist and Harrison Fords N.Y.P.D. sergeant whose vision is blurred by his own Irish ancestory and the ambiguity of that undeclared war between Irish extremists and the British Government.

Highly recommended, except for the dvd case:the discs are stored one on top of the other which could result in scratching the discs when handling.Far better in my opinion to have seperate storage holders within the box.

5.0 out of 5 stars A conversation piece., 23 Dec 2013
The most interesting property of owning this goldmine of a book is that once people know you have it they are forever asking for the answer to the origin of an expression or phrase in common use.

Its a great conversation maker with friends(or strangers)and does often settle an arguement and very often enlightens the group.

As such its become an important reference in my household.
Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cox and Nelligan SIZZLE!, 22 Dec 2013
Sadly this British version of Emile Zola's great novel is not widely available.

It captures very well the guilt suffered by the two adulterers played by the wonderful Brian Cox and delectable Kate Nelligan, but also conveys the earthy lust of the pair that ignited their crime of murdering the cuckold husband,Kenneth Cranham.

Much of the film is dark and set mainly in the dingy Parisian home of the Raquin family. This is ,after all,a BBC production from the early 1980's,extremely well done and very daring for its time as I remember.

A few years ago I met Brian Cox when he was house-hunting in my neck of the woods;he told me that it was great fun making the series, particularily with Kate Nelligan----it shows, there was a burning chemistry in all of their scenes together which was integral to the plot and helped make this a terrific production.

An added bonus for me was Alan Rickman in an early role, now a cult figure to some including myself.
Wonderful stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Consistancy is a cross between Spam and Corned Beef., 21 Dec 2013

I store this product in the fridge so perhaps that's why it's so easy to slice thinly without it breaking up.

The flavour is excellent especially served with a variety of pickles or chutneys and freshly baked bread.

A terrific stand-by to have as a quick snack when you're feeling peckish.Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars DOES WHAT IT SAYS ON THE TIN., 21 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I find the optimal way of enjoying this excellent quick meal is to fry up a couple of chops, black pudding or eggs and serve it with the mix.

Of course that is if you have the time.It is excellent on its own, with a good tomatoe flavour, but not too many button mushrooms in the ingredients listed.

It certainly does what it says on the tin:it fills you any time of the day.Excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Winner from Wales!, 16 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have been lucky enough to have sampled several different varieties of Gwynedd Confectioners chocolate products, and this is yet another winner.

The flavour is superb, perhaps akin to Lindt the Swiss company. And the product is wonderfully created in the shape of a flat but colourful Xmas pudding with no need for a fancy wrapping.

Ideal to place within your Xmas tree as a surprise treat, and serve it with a real Xmas pudding later!

3.0 out of 5 stars Sadly,though very well done,this is a repeat., 16 Dec 2013
This review is from: The Descent 2 [DVD] (DVD)
Some films cry out for a sequel: anyone who saw 'Hannibal Lecter' needed more of the mans chilling intellect on screen; 'Alien' demanded more action scenarios showing mans battle/triumph over the frightening alien creatures; I think The Descent/Dog Soldiers/28 Days Later [DVD] the original fed our appetite for more of the same.

However,in my opinion the makers have made the same film twice, with different charactors.Yes,there is slightly more gore, and yes, the charactors havn't been fleshed out as well as in the original. But in essence the plot,peril-factor and creatures are the same in both films.

I enjoyed the original,but I don't like repeats.If I did I'd watch tv all day.

Come on Neil Marshall you should not have allowed this to happen.

How about going back to the beginnings of the creatures as a plot? There is obviously a Part 3 planned.

4.0 out of 5 stars A box set worthy of its description., 16 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
'The Horror Collection' is an apt category for this compilation:superb films that are stunning and by directors with great futures ahead of them,Danny Boyle and Neil Marshall.

The Descent: the special effects and the feeling of cloying claustrophobia drive this nightmarish vision of a group of women trapped in underground caves and assaulted by human-like creatures that have adapted to this environment over time.Extremely brutal.

Dog Soldiers: peculiarly British in its humour, universal in its depiction of a platoon of soldiers being hunted down by a werewolf sect in the Scotish Highlands.Very violent, and very earthy language from the excellent British cast.

28 Days Later: a film that put the fear-factor back into the zombie genre, and has contributed to making this subject mainstream(I note that even Brad Pitt is in one, World War Z [DVD]).

Bought in this pack the films are extremely good value bearing in mind delivery costs.Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yummy!, 14 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I used to buy these puddings often in the UK.

It's one of the great tastes I miss since moving to France.

They're less than a pound each on Amazon when you buy the 12 pack:and they're as good as I remember them with a soft sponge body and a superb, strong chocolate sauce.Excellent with either cream or creme Anglais.

Delicious and highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars At times difficult to stick with but ultimately rewarding., 12 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
At nearly 6 hours long this was hard going at times but having stuck with it through some sticky moments it satisfied me eventually.

It does bear a 2nd viewing though because there are many threads going on which eventually link up to make sense.

Jason Isaacs is always very watchable;good looking and solid but with frayed, vulnerable edges and in this series he finds himself isolated, not knowing who to trust within the embassy in which he is the British Ambassador.

Pitted against him are rogue CIA,rogue American and British Special Forces and diplomatic insiders whom may have their own agendas.

I'm glad I watched to the end because it panned out well and was ultimately highly entertaining. But I am a fan of Isaacs.
