3.0 out of 5 stars spoilt by woman giving running commentary, 19 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
classic comedy. OK on discs 1-6, but disc 7 spoilt by some woman doing a running commentary on what E & E are up to; I haven't found an option to turn her off. (haven't tried later discs yet)

Saw film yonks ago, was recently given box set of Michael Caine films so watched it again recently. Taking notice of the soundtrack, I thought "That guitarist is good" so looked out for credits at end & clocked Sonny Rollins. A Google later revealed said guitarist to be none other than Barney Kessel. I should have recognised him as I've got several BK EllPees.

So I thoroughly enjoyed Barney Kessel's contribution to this music. I liked the musical ideas the band played around with, and I've been introduced to Sonny Rollins as a sax player.

Nice ;)

4.0 out of 5 stars My mum likes it, 17 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
My dad left her his stereo and then she moved and the FM aerial dad had put in the loft got left behind. Since then she's not had decent radio - just a tiny tranny job, OK for the news but not music. I chose this because of its FM (don't need the digital telly) and its gain boost. You have to turn it one way to get R4 and 90 degrees to that to get R3. Even with max signal boost you still get some background swoosh on one of those stations (cant remember which), but you can get rid of it by putting the tuner into mono mode.

Apart from the slight inconvenience of re-orientation when selecting another station, and the extendable aerial arms sticking out where you might want to walk so you have to fold them away when not in use, mum says it has much improved her enjoyment of radio. If you don't want to get someone to fit an FM aerial in the loft, this is a workable alternative.

5.0 out of 5 stars a good buzz, 30 Dec. 2011
You get a whole lot of different rhythms to read, every bar is different. The idea is to read from the start to the end of each exercise, although you can of course repeat any bar that's really tricky. It's a good buzz when you've read an exercise correctly. Applies to percussion (obviously) but also guitar chord strumming, and single note playing on any instrument. For best results, use every day with a metronome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly funny, 10 Sept. 2011

Brilliantly funny throughout. The best bit was where they issued the "welcome to our new ... nigger!"

You'd better watch this on a new telly though. On my old telly it looks as if you're watching the film through a letterbox.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mostly magic, 3 July 2010
This review is from: Live At The Troubadour (Audio CD)
Magical performances from JT and CK. The band were good too but the sound engineer should have his wrists slapped*: we hear almost no bass from the excellent Mr Sklar, which is a real shame because he's been one of my favourite bass players since I first heard Mud Slide Slim. The snare drum was too high in the mix on Its too late - perhaps he had to pull the fader up to catch the rimshots but there was no need to leave it that high when Mr Kunkel started hitting the skin. The mitigating factor is that the snare sounds like a real snare, with a good crack to it and not that dull thud with too much reverb which became popular some time ago.

Critcisms apart, I thoroughly enjoyed the set, and it's somewhat heartwarming to see seasoned musicians enjoying themselves after surviving several decades in a dangerous business.

* Comment applies to DVD that came with the CD. The CD is OK. Both were heard through the same stereo system using different players.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome. A veritable masterpiece., 2 Mar. 2009
Awesome! I caught an interview with Ms Finch on Radio 3, almost by accident; after hearing just one variation I knew I HAD to have this recording in my collection. This is not just music written by one of the worlds greatest composers: the musicianship displayed in the performance is truly excellent, likewise the musical understanding displayed in the transcription to the harp from the original.

Like I said - AWESOME. Thoroughly recommended.
