3.0 out of 5 stars Easy-listening almost funk!, 18 May 2013

Well Quincy is a produced so this is well-produced! It's that American almost funky, not quite a 'hot' groove but pleasant on the ear and a good blend of voices. It's almost 'good', nothing special, but well-crafted. A composition by (guitarist?) Eric Gale.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slow burner - persevere!, 3 May 2013

Well I couldn't take to it at first, but it really develops slowly and brilliantly and becomes a plot on a larger and larger scale.
Perhaps some of the author's development of the characters took too long for me and at first it seemed too much like Oliver Twist. In other words, I thought I was subjecting myself to Charles Dickens all over again and I didn't want that. What I did get though was (eventually, maybe 70 pages in) a world that I was immersed in and believed in whether I liked the characters or not!

It's all in the plot though!

3.0 out of 5 stars Fans: do you really want to know?, 3 May 2013

It's well written and not arty-farty and not full of musical criticism or critique.
More a story of how they met and what happened on tour.
For me it made songs like "Mannheim rainy Saturday" (I forget it's real title) easier too understand.
I found it also a little sad they they worked so hard and that the band didn't get their just rewards for the endless hours of enjoyment they gave me with Pawn Hearts and Godbluff. I tried to reward them buy buying these works on vinyl, cd and mp3 but apparently they are not all millionaires!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing: SIX stars!, 3 May 2013

Don't read reviews and DON't read the story about the poem it's based on! Just listen in a peaceful environment and marvel at the sound of these strings. The other version is a quartet or sextet or something smaller, and it too is worth a listen, but the shimmer and depth of the string orchestra makes this a must-hear experience.

This is at the pinnacle of the classical music experience in my opinion.

Unfortunately after this the composer completely lost it and we have therefore been deprived of any further brilliant compositions but this only serves to make this a gem all on its own.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not too demanding but certainly has depth, 3 May 2013

This is melodic and has a depth of harmonic invention that IN LAYMAN'S TERMS means that it is easy on the ear and somewhat Mozartian without just a cacophany of melody. It's great value for money. How long is it?
You can play it in headphones as you fall asleep.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommened by David Bowie, 3 May 2013

I've read that Bowie wished he'd written this. He could have.
Not as 'weird' as "Ghosts" (which I adore) but great minimalist instrumentation played flawlessly.
Sylvian is certainly a great wordsmith and the sentiment of the song is moving.
He also has a 'Bowie-esque' voice, and Bowie fans should lap this up.

The memory is what you need if, like me, you have wide tastes and 1000 CDs.
Choose your quality, chose your genres, make playlists, manage it all with iTunes.
Personally I don't like the iCloud but you have enough options and it's easy to use.
I recommend the iGadgitz Silicone Skin Case for a nice feel and protection.
And no, I don't work for Apple!
I tried the competition and it was initially cheaper but expensive in the long (devices stopped working and were'nt easy to manage)

Michael Franks has an easy voice and is, as usual, accompanied by some great session players with that American perfect performance. Great stuff for fans of well-played and well-produced jazzy pop.
