4.0 out of 5 stars highly consistent record, 13 May 2006
This review is from: Stadium Arcadium (Audio CD)
I have heard 25 of these tracks at least 5 times and now i feel i can place a proper judgement on this album. It is quite simply a great album.Alot of these songs are either very good or excellent with hardly any filler.

When i heard the first album the first few times i was a bit disappointed, thinking there wasn't many excellent tracks, now i feel i'm wrong. There's "dani california", "warlocks", "she's only 18" and "especially in michigan", all truly excellent songs.

But the second album is truly the best of the two.It turns up the funk and the guitar work at times is phenomal. My favoruite song is probably "readymade" with it's heavy rock riff which is outstanding, probably the heaviest track on the whole record."Desecration smile" which is basically exactly the same as "dosed" (just as "stadium ardcadium" feels like californication 2 except for the chorus) is a great opener, while other highlights includes other standouts like "she looks to me","21st century" and "hard to concentrate".

I haven't got the last 3 songs implanted in my brain yet but it wont be long i assure you of that.Forget the whole "putting it into one album" rubbish, after all some people stupidly said that about the white album. We're getting 28 solid tracks for the price of one,the more the better i say, especially as it's all so good. This beats bloodsugarsexmagick for sure but i'm not too sure when comparing it to californication and by the way,and i'm certainly gonna go for the one's i haven't got.

disc 1 - 8

disc 2 - 9

3.0 out of 5 stars SOLID BUT HARDLY BRILLIANT, 5 May 2006
This review is from: Eyes Open (Audio CD)
SNOW PATROLS NEW ALBUM IS AN ENJOYABLE LISTEN.THERE ARE A FEW EXCELLENT SONGS ON HERE,NAMELY "HANDS OPEN" AND THE BEST SONG "HEADLIGHTS ON DARK ROADS".I BELIEVE IT'S NO REAL COINCIDENCE THAT THESE ARE THE ROCKIEST SONGS ON HERE.

THE ALBUM AT TIMES IS A LITTLE SLOW AND LACKS OOMPH AT TIMES,VEERING MORE TOWARDS JAMES BLUNT THAN INDIE KINGS THE ARCTIC MONKEYS.

THERE IS NOT REALLY A BAD SONG,THOUGH THE WEAKER ONES INCLUDE "SET THE FIRE TO THE THIRD BAR" AND "THE FINISH LINE",WHILE NEW SINGLE "YOU'RE ALL THAT I HAVE" IS GREAT BUT HARDLY MIND BLOWING.

SO A GOOD,ENJOYABLE ALBUM BUT HARDLY ONE OF THE BEST I'VE HEARD THIS YEAR.COULD HAVE BEEN HEAVIER.

5.0 out of 5 stars probably worth the hype, 27 Jan. 2006
I say probably as in not definitely because it's as if the arctic monkeys are being built up to be one of the best bands of all time or something already and though i doubt they will achieve that, this is still a fantastic album. One of the best debuts i've ever heard, though a bit too soon to compare it to definitley maybe.
I think when the dust settles as well as the hype, this will probably go down a classic but let's not get too excited-it's hard not too though!
This album goes along at a cracking pace without hardly ever stopping for breath, with the singer spurting out lines almost as quick as a rapper would. The lyrics are observant, funny at times, and downright brilliant - "the weekend rock stars are in the toliets practising their lines", "dancing to electro-pop like a robot from 1984" etc.
The riffs also come thick and fast and there isnt't really a bad song on here and too many highlights too mention,an album that you could listen to all the way through every time.My favourite tracks are "mardy bum" and "a certain romance" but we really are spoilt by the quality on here, most of the album makes the 2 singles, especially "dancefloor" , seem redundant.
An absolute cracker but something tells me they'll never reach these heights again.

4.0 out of 5 stars truly great album, 22 Oct. 2005
This review is from: London Calling (Audio CD)
This album has been hyped and hyped and i have to say i thoroughly enjoy this album.
With 19 tracks there's a lot there - taking in many musical styles.
When it's brilliant it's up there with the very best - "london calling" (obviously), "spanish bombs" (why wasnt this on essential clash?), "the guns of brixton" , the extremely catchy "koka kola", "the card cheat" and the outstanding but very un-punk-like "train in vain".
This album proves that the clash really are a great band musically but sometimes it doesn't always work. I thought you'd have to have a great range in taste to like every track on here as many of these songs are very different and that's it's downfall in some ways.
There is something to love for everybody on this album and you can pick it up at a bargain price, so if you haven't got it you have to ask why. The Clash? a punk band? not on this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars perfection - 10/10, 14 Oct. 2005
This review is from: Antics (Audio CD)
this is truly an exceptional follow-up to the great debut "turn on the bright lights". I think this album is far better because it's far more consistent. Some of the songs weren't so great on the last one whereas almost every song or every song on here is great.
It fits together so well and if you are listening to it for the first you'll wonder why me and so many others rate this so highly. It's a real grower - simple as that.Although the tracks seem nothing at first, with every listen it improves and there seems to be something new to every track that didn't stand out before.
The guitar playing is exceptional, the songs build up,twist and turn,go places you wouldn't expect and after a while you'll find yourself believing this is actually a catchy album, albeit after 10 or more listens.
"Narc" even has a dancy kind of groove in the background,as does the exceptional "slow hands".The sound is very dark and these have been copmpared to Joy Division and rightly so.
This album is a classic that you have to buy to understand how good it is, my only warning being that while you might love it if you understand it, you wont love it if you like easy-to-listen-to music and simple pop and not much else.

5.0 out of 5 stars outstanding debut, 7 Oct. 2005
This review is from: Silent Alarm (Audio CD)
of all the bands that have been hyped,Bloc Party are one band who actually deserve it and have made one of the best albums of 2005.Bands like the Kaiser Chiefs and Franz Ferdinand(although admittedly their second album is fab) are behind this little beauty.
Lots of standout songs - "helicopter" with it's ace riff, "this modern love" which is one of the best songs of the year, "pioneers" and the slowie "blue light" and many more highlights prove that these guys are probably the best new british band of 2005.

4.0 out of 5 stars quite an improvement on the first album, 7 Oct. 2005
i did like the 1st album but felt it was overhyped and nothing special, with only 2 really brilliant songs.
The second is a vast improvement-catchier,bigger songs with better hooks and more creativity.
The suprise about this album and what makes it better is the two slower songs, the beatlesesque "elanor put your boots on" and the radiohead feel of "fade together" - 2 very strong songs.
and then of course there's the catchy numbers -"do you want to", "this boy" with its "i want a car hook", "walk away" which seems like a much more complete song than any they've done before, and the outstanding album finisher "outsiders".It's really hard picking a favourite on here as opposed to how much better "take me out" was compared to the other songs on the last album.
Of course there is the odd filler track, but there's a lot of fun to be had in listening to this and finally Franz Ferdinand are on their way to deserving the hype that surrounds them.

5.0 out of 5 stars classic fun record, big on riffs, 6 Sept. 2005
This review is from: Back In Black (Audio CD)
i reckon ac/dc are the music version of a Hollywood summer action blockbuster - big dumb, simple fun.I own four AC/DC albums-this being the best one i've got and i really don't feel the need to buy anymore as all their songs go along the same lines-catchy ,simplistic and with a big riff.I would be suprised if the critics liked this sort of thing.
Back in Black is a hugely enjoyable album with no bad songs on it and at least half of them would go down as excellent-namely the ace "hells bells" , with it's ace intro, "let me put my love into you", the supremely catchy "you shook me all night long", "back in black" which has been used on channel 4 and the ace closer "rock and roll aint noise pollution"
if i bought the rest of their albums,i seriously doubt they would come near this one.A classic that anyone, even non-metal fans can enjoy - heavy but not that heavy.

5.0 out of 5 stars what more needs to be said?, 5 Sept. 2005
This review is from: Funeral (Audio CD)
what more can i add to these reviews? This album screams instant classic and if there is any justice it will go down as one of the greatest albums ever surely.
Original,varied,sad,joyous,anthemic,a masterpiece.
As for album of the year - well it's hard to choose between this and Coldplay but this is one fantastic album you must own.
Standouts (although all of them probably are as they all contain at least one awesome part) include "power out", "tunnels", the anthemic "wake up" and the best track "crown of love" - pure sadness but pure excellence.
Buy it now.

2.0 out of 5 stars massively overrated, 22 Aug. 2005
This review is from: Blood On The Tracks (Audio CD)
i'm sure i'm going to get a backlash from the 50 odd year olds who think this is good but it's highly overrated tosh mostly.
Overlong and the guy cannot sing very well. He would be no better than a busker if it wasn't for his admittedly good poetry in the songs.
Too acoustic, no real musical invention at all, and yes overlong."shelter from the storm", i must admit is rather good, the rest is passable and anybody who does a cover of Dylan would easily make his version better (Hendrix for example).
Check out Girls alouds cover of like a rolling stone, out soon in all bad record shops.
Even i would fail to give this guy a quid if i saw him busking outside Fenwicks (it's in newcastle) and i am a rather generous guy.
