5.0 out of 5 stars amazing brass, you can't help but jigg in your ..., 22 April 2015

Man, even by the high standards of this group, this CD is something else. It just leaves me with a huge grin on my face. This is Snarky, but on a huge scale, with a full on orchestra backing them up. It's a wild mash-up of funk, New Orleans jazz, and whateve else they throw in, played to perfection, but more 'grown up', more gravitas than before. Some truly monstrous Moog bass on the brooding first track, for me track 3 is a real highlight, amazing brass, you can't help but jigg in your seat. I would liken this to something like a 1970s Dirty Harry film score in some ways, but with a modern twist. The DVD is as ever entertaining and elightening, though not with the sound quality of the CD. Easily my favourite album of the year so far, so full of energy, I love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Marcus is back with a bang, 19 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Afrodeezia (Audio CD)
Super-star bassist Marcus Miller is back with a bang. His bass playing is as good as ever, if not better. While there are players who can certainly play in a more complicated style, nobody has that combination of perfect timing and clean, deep (very deep) tone that is his signature sound. As the title of the album implies, there is a lilt towards African rhythims, but only a lilt really. If anything, the jazzy side is coming more to the fore than ever through the background brass and solos from the other musicians, but there are large doses of funk infused as usual. There is a good variation of playing styles, classic thumping to smooth fretless, and the quality is faultless. Mr Miller is on a roll with his last two albums, it's great to hear that he is trying to progress rather than just sit on his laurels. You can tell he is really putting a lot of effort in the construction of both his writing and playing.

In short, a sure fire 'buy' for Miller fans, and fans of jazz funk/fusion in general.

5.0 out of 5 stars Value set of jazz-fusion masterpieces, 9 Oct. 2014

Stunning set of five albums - all great in my opinion. Super value, can't complain on that front. Shame there is no listing of the musicians, but that can easily be found elsewhere these days.

All of the albums come under the 'jazz-fusion in the 70s' banner, with crazy levels of musicianship. The pleasant suprise will come with the amount of melody involved - it's not just a bunch of solos for the sake of it. Even my teenage daughter likes some of the tracks, which is a miracle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super effort from Lee Ritenour and friends, 9 Oct. 2014
This review is from: Rhythm Sessions (Audio CD)
The best thing Lee Ritenour has done in many a year - a hark back to his earlier days, but with a very modern production. Certainly can't argue with the personal brought in - Stanley Clarke, the late, great George Duke, Chick Corea, Marcus Miller, to name but a few. There is certainly a very funky slant to everything, but not in the typical 'smooth' jazz mould, the standard of playing is higher, and there is more bite to the whole affair. Lee even brings back his fuzz box for a few tracks!
The acid test is, did I enjoy listening to it - the answer is a big yes. If you like jazz-funk, you mostly likely will too.

This really is a wonderful set of musicians at work - not least Jean-Luc himself. What sets this album apart is the strength of the songs, this is not just a bunch of noodling, but there is proper structure, and most importantly, melody. Jazz-fusion for the modern age, with very fine recording quality to boot.

Along the lines of Daft Punk, very enjoyable stuff, and Mr Norse is a classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Latin/Cuban and 70s Dizzy on fine form, 13 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Very Best of Jazz (Audio CD)
Quite an odditiy of a collection, note that it does not cover the be-bop period, but is a collection of Dizzy's latin/funk influenced songs, mostly from the mid-seventies. That might sound like a disappointment, but it is anything but, and the recording quality is very impressivle. It includes a couple of tracks from the now rather expensive collaboration with Lalo Schifrin, but the real quality is on the other tracks, there is no drop in quality of the soloing, not just from the man himself. If you can get this at a decent price, it's worth it for Carnival alone.

Quality 70s jazz funk with a bit of a classical twist, though very mild, but enough to make this pair unique. Quite refined in an odd way.
Nice clear sound too, the remastering has been well done. Well worth your time and money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I thought it would be, 23 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Brand New Heavies (Audio CD)
There are a couple of OK tracks (the last one for me in particular), but if I am honest, the sound quality is not that great on many of the tracks, and it's just not up there in terms of song writing and playing to keep me interested for long. If you are a fan, then it will probably be more your thing.

I'll always buy on CD if there is an option, but since there isn't in this case, I'll go by what I hear - and I love it. It's very modern jazz, perhaps in the style of recent Yellowjackets if I had to compare to something similar. The sound of the piano really drives the tracks, a lot of use of the lower registers to give a feeling of subtle power and richness. While there is a certain pleasentness to the whole affair, this is not the kind of 'smooth jazz' that was in favour a while back, it's more organic and flowing. Give them a chance, you might like what you hear.
