My Name is Daphne Fairfax: A Memoir
My Name is Daphne Fairfax: A Memoir
by Arthur Smith
Edition: Paperback
Price: 8.42

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting account of stand up and like in the smoke, 28 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Ok, I admit to being a fan, and probably a fellow "grumpy old man". The book is an honest account of Arthur's life and loves and the comedy circuit. Its just very funny in places and I was sorry to reach the end. I enjoyed feeling like I got an insight to what makes the guy tick and is parts may well prove to be a good guide to "blokes" for anyone who wants to know.

Charming and funny and touching

A Nightmare's Prayer: A Marine Harrier Pilot's War in Afghanistan
A Nightmare's Prayer: A Marine Harrier Pilot's War in Afghanistan
by Michael Franzak
Edition: Mass Market Paperback
Price: 4.70

5.0 out of 5 stars True tales from the front line, 28 April 2014

I like a memoir and what made this one stick out for me was the vein of authenticity that runs through the narrative. The author went to Afghanistan possibly naively and probably unsure about what to expect. He tells the tale of 12 months of combat in a Harrier, supporting troops on the ground. He deals with over work and exhaustion and operating way outside his comfort zone.

Its easy to identify with the author and his experiences. Fully recommended and one of the best of its genre (that I have read, anyway) IT doesn't try to make a political point - which is to its credit

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use - helps in wet snow, 28 April 2014

What I needed was a quality wipe on wax to top up my hot wax for a spring ski trip. Personally, I hate that stop-start judder on meeting sticky spring snow - often made worse by man made snow

The wax goes on nicely - I did use a texturing pad (like a scouring pad) to open up the structure first and clean the bases a little, and then applied the wax. Its quite thin - and it goes a long way. Once dry, the felt pad was used to polish the wax

I used it every day for six days on two pairs of skis and there is still quite a lot left. The wax improved the glide performance and worked pretty well. I recommend the product and will be getting the colder weather wax for cold trips - so I can top up my pre trip hot wax

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not perfect, 26 Dec 2013

I'm a long time fan of Global products and in the end my heart ruled by head and I plumped for the GS10. It's just like all other Globals in that it is a quality build and looks great. It cuts cheese and the holes allow the cheese to drop off the knife

The only slight flaw is that it has a one sided bevelled blade. This means that in hard cheese, especially, it tends to not cut vertically, but can go at an angle, an angle related to the one sided bevel.

I like the knife - but perfection was just one design detail away

The Acoustic Album

5.0 out of 5 stars An unexpected delight, 10 Dec 2013

Ok, so I have to first admit I'm biased as a long time L42 fan, but one who is in a minority in his own household. What happened when I first played this CD was the admission from a resident non fan that "hey those songs are really pretty good"

What I was told was that the L42 "normal style" had "hidden" what were very good songs....behind all that "funk" silliness. Now, obviously as a fan, I didn't agree, I like the Mark King bass style and the L42 "feel", especially from the first two albums.

But, I do like the acoustic treatment - it shows the songs off in their simplest form and does indeed, least to me - confirm that L42 - especially when the Goulds were involved - were excellent song writers.

Even if not a fan, these songs are worth a go on their own merits.

Alain Baxter Unfinished Business: The Authorised Biography of Britain's Olympic Skier
Alain Baxter Unfinished Business: The Authorised Biography of Britain's Olympic Skier

4.0 out of 5 stars Business remains unfinished, 28 July 2013

Alain Baxter's story is well know. As a low grade sportsman, I understand very little of the pressures, highs and low and struggle of top grade sports - yet this book gives an insight

The bronze Alain won really should have remained his. No one else wanted it and his "crime" was surely at the most minor of infractions

Alain was disadvantaged in a career by coming from a mainly non alpine country and his achievements really have to put in that context. His best seasons on the tour would have been remarkable without the Olympic result. The top of the tree in individual sports is very narrow and anyone coming from the UK and getting top 10 World Cup finishes at all is a star. The icing on the cake should have been that bronze - which for me is really Alain's

Many will disagree - that's up to them

4.0 out of 5 stars Rainbow at its later best, 28 July 2013

Many band have periods of so called "proper" music and "commercial" music. If applied to Rainbow - this is firmly in the latter period. That said, it is one of my favourite albums by the group - because it is catchy. I like a lot of Rainbow's catelogue - as a bit of a Ritchie Blackmore fan and as such this represents the lighter accessible end of his genre

You'll probably know if this is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars How you should want your history written, 21 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Many moons ago as an O level student, studying modern history, I liked the subject, (1919 to the present day) but thought the books often stuffy.

Deighton as an excellent novelist manages to combine good research with a good narrative. An excellent read which transfers knowledge, almost without you knowing!

What is there to add to the many reviews of this great film? It speaks on many levels, but the basic level that life is not measured solely in terms of money, but in community and belonging. That said, the locals looking at how much they will be worth is the stuff of anyone who thinks they are in a for a windfall.or has had a discussion of a lottery win whilst "refreshed"

Great sound track too

What's not to like?
