Here Comes the Night: The Dark Soul of Bert Berns and the Dirty Business of Rhythm and Blues
Here Comes the Night: The Dark Soul of Bert Berns and the Dirty Business of Rhythm and Blues
by Joel Selvin
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 13.72

4.0 out of 5 stars Dirty business, indeed..., 26 Jun 2014

A substantial book by long-time music critic Joel Selvin on Bert Berns - 'the forgotten man of rhythm and blues'. Jerry Wexler is portrayed as "...duplicitous, poisonous and arrogant" and Bert doesn't fare much better. But from all the grubbiness sprang some of the most sublime of 60s music - 'Twist & Shout', 'Cry Baby', 'Tell Him' and 'Everybody Needs Somebody to Love' being just a sample.
Not every detail of this thoroughly researched work is accurate, though - 'Wipe Out' not '5-4-3-2-1' was RSG's first theme tune.

You buy a 48 track CD and then rip the ones you like ...easy really!
(I remember that being a mod was never admitting that you couldn't afford it!)

A.D. 500: A Year in the Dark Ages: A Journey Through the Dark Isles of Britain and Ireland
by Simon Young
Edition: Paperback
Price: 8.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!, 21 Jun 2013
I'm a soft-touch for historical books - especially 'real history' (i.e. pre-trousers)- but somehow this had passed me by until I bought it as a last minute flight read at Manchester airport.
I was engrossed from the start until the finish ...history brought to life without being killed by love interest! I wish I hadn't read it so I could start it again afresh.

4.0 out of 5 stars Influential singer finally gets biography, 18 Oct 2011

In all honesty I knew Little Willie John better for other people's versions of his earlier hits (Peggy Lee's 'Fever', Peter Green's 'Need Your Love So Bad', Little Milton's 'Grit's Ain't Groceries) than I did for his own work. On reading this very accessible book (read in one day) I understand more about his meteoric rise to fame, if not fortune. Understandably, since most of those interviewed are family and friends, it's stronger on his rise than on his fall to drug and alcohol dependency. There are echoes of the careers of Frankie Lymon and Sam Cooke too. Well worth buying if your interested in the birth of soul music.

I suppose the word 'revival' gives it away but I'd fondly imagined that this DVD would be a compilation of archive recordings when the artists were 'in their pomp' rather than an 'oldies revue'. Pity because I'd pay much more for the older, grainy-B&W footage if it exists. Not blaming the product, by the way, just my inflated expectations.

A simple, high-value way to get my guitars stored safely without cluttering up the music room ...and here it is! Guitars are same on the wall from bumps and scratches (and they look good, too!) The only downside is -she knows how many I have!

Vaneese Thomas is daughter of r'n'b/soul icon Rufus, he of 'Walkin' the Dog', 'Funky Chicken' et al. I was fortunate enough to see her perform at Porretta Soul Festival in 2009 and bought this as a result. It's a good representation of her intense yet melodic soul delivery although it can't capture her warm on-stage personality. Well worth buying if you're a fan of Aretha, Etta or Vaneese's sister Carla.
