The New Avengers (8 Disc Collector's Edition Box Set) [DVD]
The New Avengers (8 Disc Collector's Edition Box Set) [DVD]
Dvd ~ Patrick Macnee
Price: £22.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Good light vintage TV, 23 Mar. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
After The Avenger-Complete Collection, this set restored my confidence in vintage commercial TV. Unlike the original, it is well directed and acted, and great fun. The young Joanna Lumley is simply divine as Perdey. Gareth Hunt plays Gambit without outshining his co-stars. Patrick Macnee is....well.....he IS John Steed. The last few episodes filmed in Canada let the series down but are not bad enough to spoil the overall enjoyment.

2.0 out of 5 stars Only for the dedicated, 23 Mar. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This box set is strictly for the lovers of vintage TV. The stories, acting and production standards are very poor. The first series with Ian Hendry was probably the best but the video and sound quality on this DVD set is so bad that only a dedicated enthusiast would bother to watch it. Patrick Macnee as John Steed gave the later series some panache. Of Steeds accompanists, Honor Blackman was a good actress but seems somehow misplaced and wasted; Diana Rigg was the most remembered actress but the story lines and production will make most viewers cringe; Linda Thorson was the point that I closed the boxset.

The set contains innumerable interviews, clips, trailers and scripts on Pdf format that may be of interest to the dedicated students of British vintage commercial TV

Radio Times Guide to Films 2016
Radio Times Guide to Films 2016

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable, 23 Mar. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Indispensable and so much more convenient than having to look up movies on the internet. The actual reviews can be a bit variable in style. In fact you can almost tell the age and social experience of some reviewers, but that all adds charm and does not detract from the usefulness. You will probably disagree with some of the ratings, but what do you expect. Many years ago I used to love Halliwell's film guides. He was quirky but predictable. I could easily judge whether I would like a movie even when Leslie Halliwell did not like it because I grew to know his taste. The only weakness of Radio Times Guide is that it uses multiple reviewers so that predictability is not there. With Halliwell long since gone and the current Radio Times Guide incorporating 24,000 movie reviews it is the best you will get.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best, 23 Mar. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It may be more expensive than other cleaners but it is worth every penny. The dust collection is the best I have ever seen. The noise level is so low that even my cat does not run away. The cleaning and emptying is straightforward and of course you don'y need to buy bags.

The hose and attachments are a bit fiddly to set up but they do work very well for cleaning ceiling corners or stairs etc. The tilting ball idea is great for manoeuvring under obstacles but you will need to get used to it if you have only had conventional uprights before. The appearance is functional rather than a designer plastic blob like most other cleaners. If you enjoy technology you will like the appearance. It would be great for cleaning out the Tardis.

If you can afford the price, go for it. It is the best I have ever used.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very elegant and functional whistling kettle., 23 Mar. 2016

Whistle is positive and loud. The spout pours well. The base is large and collects all the heat on my gas hob. The handle does not get uncomfortably hot. The appearance is great for the retro look kitchen. I have no criticisms after 2 months usage.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent value knife block for heavier professional quality knives, 9 Feb. 2016

This is an excellent value knife block for heavier professional quality knives. It will easily take my 25 cm chef's knife and my 26 cm carver. The slots are wide enough for thick bladed pro knives (55mm x 5mm). You may find the slots too wide for cheaper and lighter knives.

5.0 out of 5 stars A follow on from Wheelspin, covering the early post ..., 13 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: More Wheelspin (Paperback)
A follow on from Wheelspin, covering the early post war years. If you own a car from this period or are interested in this sport then this is a "must read" book. It covers the transition from the pre war largely production cars and works teams to the specialist "new" makers such as Allard or Dellow and the many home built specials. If you have no interest in the cars or the Trials and Hillclimbs of this period then it will only be of limited interest.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money, 9 Aug. 2015
Claims to be a Blu-ray system but can't read ExFAT or NTFS file systems via the USB input. That means that if you store your Blu-ray movies on a portable hard drive then you cannot play them on this device. It only reads FAT files which are limited to 4Gb - I have never seen any Blu-ray movies that small.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia from an age of optimism, 3 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I loved this. These episodes need no introduction for those old enough to remember them. They still have the excitement, humour and optimism that was always a part of 'Trek. This set has been enhanced by the technicians to improve the colour and sharpness when viewed on your modern TV. It really works without detracting from the period feel of these episodes. The extras may appeal to some but I would rather not have seen the original pilot (awful) or know that Captain Kirk and Mr Spock have got old (like me) and no longer look as they did in StarTrek, nor do I need to know that SS Enterprise was small enough to fit in my bathtub.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a series worth remembering, 3 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I seem to differ in taste from many on this one. I thought I had seen it and enjoyed it in the 70s but when I watched this set I could only remember a few episodes of the first series. Series one is amusing - no more. The acting is generally poor and the jokes repetitive. Much of it had the feel of unscripted hamming. Episode two is worse with a very dated and poorly scripted scenario. I gave the set to the charity shop after the first few of episode three which was awful in my opinion.

Some episodes use small doses of racism, homophobia and larger doses of anti female chauvinism to get a laugh - it rather jars nowadays but does serve to remind that at least one aspect of British comedy is better nowadays.
