2.0 out of 5 stars You can fool all of the people, 5 Nov 2010
Episode 4 and Episode 6 - the ones written by Ashley Pharoah - are excellent . As for the rest , there are a few good lines for Gene Hunt , but the time travel theme becomes irritating - Sam hearing voices and the will he won't he wake from his coma question became a distraction from the run of the mill cop show story lines . I am probably 5 years older than Sam and the 70's nostalgia is fine but a great TV series it does not make . The Man Utd Man City episode was just not believable , annoyingly so because it came after Pharoah's excellent tart with a heart episode . Clever idea - done many times before and since - but the universal praise from the media , BAFTA and the 5 star reviewers here genuinely amazes me . I so wanted to like this but was so disappointed .

1.0 out of 5 stars If this is the future of cinema , count me out, 21 Dec 2009
This review is from: Avatar [DVD] (DVD)
Avatar is undoubtedly beautiful to look at and a stunning technical achievement and for that reason people should see it . The CGI is superb and in the second third you are swept away by the world that Cameron has created and the central love story , albeit that, of course, the whole thing feels like a 21st century update of Pocahontas .

However , the story is trite and sermonizing . People have called it a protest against US colonialism in Iraq and Afghanistan or an update of the western or Star Wars but its message is too simplistic and black and white to be taken seriously unless you are seven years old. The dialogue is appalling and the CGI aliens are more believable than the humans who, with the exception of Sigourney Weaver's character, are crudely drawn cartoon figures . The final third is a horrible explosion fest , the film becomes an insult to the intelligence and we couldn't wait for it to finish . It felt like Cameron was showing off what he can do with all his toys and couldn't resist the formulaic ending . I didn't care what happened in the last hour, and found my mind wandering towards memories of great films with proper scripts that engage the emotions. If you are after CGI driven science fiction ,The Lord of the Rings trilogy is light years ahead of Avatar because of its humanity , the power of its story and the fact that its special effects are secondary to the narrative .

I am sure Avatar could have been a great film if more attention had been paid to the script . As it is , it's more like a video game than a serious piece of cinema . Perhaps it will be as ground breaking as Citizen Kane by sending cinema even further down that road , in which case the twelve foot blue aliens on Pandora will probably think we've got the film industry we deserve. Avatar will share the fate of Jurassic Park - in ten years time we will all look back and say "So what ?"

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful masterpiece, 28 Sep 2008
This review is from: O Espirito Da Paz (Audio CD)
This is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard . It was playing in a restaurant in Nerja in 1996, I asked its title and went out and bought it the next day . Now it would be a certainty to take on to the desert island.

The title of the album and the cover give you a pretty good idea of what's coming.Relaxing , sensual and featuring Teresa's angelic voice alongside gentle acoustic guitars , its the perfect example of how listening to songs in a language you don't understand can be so rewarding and is one of the very few albums that I absolutely never tire of . I would recommend Madredeus to anyone but this is their masterpiece -its more classical and less fado/ folk than some of their later albums . It works as one piece of music to be listened to from start to finish - each track flows into the next - while tracks such as Ao Longe o Mar and As Core Do Sol will grace any playlist . Yes , you could say it's a little melancholic , but in a way that's uplifting . An absolute must for any collection , I would give it seven out of five if I could . Please , please ignore the guy who gave it one . Buy it, then recommend it to your friends.
