3.0 out of 5 stars Replacement Kindle fails to capture my heart, 29 April 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
After dropping my dearly loved Kindle and cracking the screen, this was the replacement but I have to say I have yet to fall in love with it.
Like so many technological toys today, they become increasingly complicated and not always so easy to use. And that is my beef ...
I prefer the button on the side as a way of turning the page rather than the touch screen. I don't like the way you have to navigate round the houses to get at the information and find the old model was infinitely easier to use. Wake up Amazon! Keep it simple!

Once upon a time, David Hanington's family lived on Monserrat -PV.... Pre-Volcano.
This charming little story stems from this time - and the wit and humour are to be savoured!
I loved it!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Biography with a Difference, 5 April 2015

I always wondered what the dynamic was between F Scott and Zelda, and apart from the alcohol, what their life together had been like, and this book fills in a lot of the gaps. It's well written, well constructed and does not appear (to me anyway) to have been too 'fictionalised' when it comes to the thoughts and feelings described.
It's certainly not 'schmaltzy', which is refreshing! I enjoyed it, would have liked a bit more character depth but without the actual person to give it, the author has done well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful vignette of Colonial India post Independance, 25 Feb. 2015

Absolutely adored this - as a huge fan of the Jewel in the Crown, and a child of the Raj, I was giggling - not that quietly ...! The characters are very familiar, that caricature of the retired Indian Army or Civil Servant from the pre-Independance era who decided to stay on in India, but to continue with the lifestyle of the colonial era. Couldn't put it down, and sad to finish reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly sensitive story, 25 Feb. 2015

The more of Elizabeth Jane Howard's books that I read, the more I like her! I read this in a few days, and enjoyed the way she builds character so that you very soon feel you know these people. However, you don't - and the twists in the plot throw constant surprises. Maybe you don't know people who behave like this - I don't - but it doesn't stop you wanting to find out how they resolve a situation that becomes increasingly fraught.

Four characters, four viewpoints.... A famous playwright and his secretary, wife, and assistant. Human relationships and dichotomies - a book of insight and dilemma, beautifully handled and of course, beautifully written!

The first of the three stories of Toby Roberts and his friends from Cambridge in the late 1950's makes evocative reading to those of a certain age, and must seem like another world to the you get generation!!! Charming, well written (of course!) and eminently readable. Hugely enjoyed!

4.0 out of 5 stars Escaping from Burma with a school of orphans via elephant to India!, 1 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: ELEPHANT MOON (Kindle Edition)
An almost unbelievable story of escape from Burma and the invading Japanese army! A missionary takes her school of half-caste children to escape, and they end up with a herd of elephants and a bunch of British soldiers hacking their way to India through impenetrable jungle!
Incredibly exciting, not always brilliantly written but true - and terribly brave!

The Secret Life of Bletchley Park: The WWII Codebreaking Centre and the Men and Women Who Worked There
The Secret Life of Bletchley Park: The WWII Codebreaking Centre and the Men and Women Who Worked There
Price: £6.02

4.0 out of 5 stars WWII code breaking - the inside story, 1 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The top secret decoding work during WWII was based in Bletchley park and no one ever spoke about their war work until s few years ago.
Interviews with a few of the original code breakers throws interesting light on a very important aspect of British Intelligence which played a major part in defeating the forces of Hitler and keeping the UK from starving or being invaded. Very interesting.
