I am a huge fan of Deborah Moggach and also the little Welsh town where this is set! The characters spring to life out of the pages and it is a delightful read. Highly recimmended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amusing and informative, 9 April 2014

Having read some of Cash Peters' work, I looked forward to this little travel story of his holiday on a river boat in Southern France - and was highly amused!
Some bits were not particularly brilliant but then it was a river cruise with calm places... Touristy sight-seeing in Arles and Lyon, Avignon and other mediaeval towns were interesting, if filched from the guide book!
I certainly know my French geography a bit better!

Well, we've all made mistakes! Here is a very amusing - if complicated - 'family saga' which I found full of evocative description of London towards the end of the 20th Century - pre mobile phones and Internet bondage.
Characters I swear I have met... Situations uncannily familiar... Some 'laugh out loud' bits...
Yes... Recommended!

This was the first of Deborah Moggach's books I have read for a long time and loved it! It's a delicately handled story which many single people will resonate with...!

Oh Crikey... What an unbelievable mess people can get themselves into with the best intentions in the world!
This bunch of characters .certainly go through the wringer...
I love Deborah Moggach as a writer - she suddenly throws something into the mix that brings in an extra dimension, and makes you wonder where she gets it all from ... Real life? Imagination? Experience? Friends or family?
Not worth asking - just read her books and enjoy the art of a really good story-teller!!

So bored I couldn't be bothered to finish it. Sorry Paulo - normally love his work but this was not what I thought it was going to be and didn't like it!

The second volume of Old Filth continues the fascinating story which follows the first one so closely you have to read them in order.
Highly readable !!

3.0 out of 5 stars Rather padded out, 16 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having loved the first two Old Filth stories, I was rather sad to find this was - frankly - just padding.
I didn't think it added much to the earlier stories, except by introducing more aspects or characters, but they were all rather peripheral, and one got the impression that this whole book was made up of what had been cut from the earlier versions of the story.
However, when you love a book and are sad to lose touch with the characters when you finish it, the one redeeming feature of this volume is that it delays the inevitable ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars Full of good sensible guidance!, 16 Mar 2014

First I have to say that, as someone who has been exploring the spiritual and psychological areas of life for thirty-odd years, I initially thought I would read this with an open mind. I loved Cash's earlier book About Believing, and just wondered how he was going to address this one as the title is a bit daunting!
But I could not put it down !
There are still phrases which are running through my head, excellent wisdom, written in such a light and amusing way that you rip through this quirky little book wondering what is coming next!
And all the time, secrets of successful living are being planted...
Highly recommended. Hope it finds the place it deserves!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual and captivating, 9 Feb 2014

Yes, unusual and captivating! Set in the Sultan's palaces in Istanbul, this is a very sexy book! Sexy in the sense of deep dark action, relationships and exotic surroundings.
My own lifetime interest in all things Turkish was enhanced by so much in this imaginative novel - excellent background research of history and artifacts and the personnel of the Ottoman Sultan's court.
And a powerful love story!
I enjoyed it very much, and find myself remembering aspects of the story weeks later. You can't say that about many novels !
