4.0 out of 5 stars Horny R1138 GWR Frieght Train review, 20 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this Train set for my son and am a complete novice when it comes to Train sets.
The Hornby set feels solid and attention is paid to the detail on the train. It comes with a mat, which is actually a giant printed poster. For the long term, a hard backing is needed.
The track layout feels like it is the next size up from a basic layout as it already contains an extension pack.
The train itself is not huge and looks silly pulling long passenger carriages (as it would on a real train).
It is quite expensive and had I not seen it at a reduced price, I probably would not have bought it (hence 4 / 5).
The train can actually go quite fast in both directions. As novice I have discovered several features that must be well known to train set enthusiasts:
The Trains can be tricky to get all wheels on the track. (I think there is an accessory to help with this)
Big Long carriages do not like tight bends at speed (they come off).
When using points to guide the train onto an inner circuit (I bought more track) you need to get jumper leads from Hornby and these are not included in Extension packs A & B.Without these the train loses power, but I think they are relatively cheap.
The Track needs to be cleaned with a cloth, as any grease / dirt can stop the power to the train
Train track has to be carefully aligned when joining one section to another, so continually putting it away and getting it out is time consuming - setting it up on a hard backing is a better solution.
My child is very careful with the set and its contents, but not an ideal present for kids who leave it lying around and step on it (the carriages are expensive). I can see why people like train sets and this is a good introductory set with the plethora of accessories and trains etc from Hornby and others we were left wanting to buy more bits and pieces (such as electric rather than manual points) after using this set.

3.0 out of 5 stars Shadows series 3, 15 Aug. 2013

Bought this product after watching the series as a child.
On the positive side there are some clever stories and some well known talented actors.

It is watchable but it is evident that the programme makers must have had a severely restricted
scenery budget. For several of the stories, the scenes were filmed in a studio set up to try and look like the outside world but for all intents and purposes they look like the set of a amateur dramatic club performance.
To be fair modern British Kids TV still suffers partially from the same problem to a much lesser degree.
Being made in the late 1970's they had to rely on blue screen technology for effects.

The dim lighting in many of the episodes just adds to the atmosphere and the plethora of later to be famous talented actors make up for some of the less well known and slightly wooden acting of a few of the others.

On balance it is worth watching for the storylines alone. I would hope one day they would re-make this but fear they would loose some of the scary atmosphere due it being too scary and dark for younger children now.

3.0 out of 5 stars Light, rattley, finishing not good, 17 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
On the positive side it is very cheap and was delivered promptly.
But probably due to the low price, it is made from very light plastic.
The Keys have an OK feedback and are not unpleasant to use other than there is
rattley feel that is seen on many cheaper keyboards.
The Upper and lower case markings and colour code markings are also good points.

Looking at it closely 2 or 3 of the many screws that hold the back on were missing, but there were enough other screws to hold it together securely. There is was also a slight hairline crack in one corner, but again only 1-2 mm long and not enough to cause problems or warrant sending it back. Bottom line is you get what you pay for!

4.0 out of 5 stars HP Pavillion G6 i3 review, 14 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Purchased this item in January 2013 when it was £368, for this price you get an HP laptop with HD DVDDrive and an i3 processor, so very good value. Compared to my HP i7 8440p laptop, thie machine is a little bit more of a budget laptop, so there is no metal casing and surrounds, but it is half the price.
So far have only used it for surfing the internet and playing DVDs and the computer feels completely unstressed by these tasks. The screen is very sharp and well lit, the sound is no better or worse than my i7 Laptop, possibly having a little bit more volume. If there is a downside it is Windows 8. I will not review Windows 8 here, but the user interface if you have not got a touch screen feels like a step back as you have to use keyboard shortcuts, the screen goes blank when updating, most of the useful icons on IE10 have to be manually installed etc. Turning it off and logging off applications is not easy either and you have to refer to the literture that comes with the laptop.
A decent computer but I cant see the logic in many of the functions in Windows 8 after 2 weeks of use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gas detector review, 10 Feb. 2013

This small compact was a very reasonably priced and came with a single sheet of instructions.
As it is mains powered it will need to be positioned with 3ft of a socket and it is suggested that it is positioned 50cm from the floor.
The unit feels robust and well built, the only problem was that the instructions failed to mention that when powered up for the first time some residual coating/oil is heated up and vapourised causing a slight plasticky smell and the detector alarm to go off!

However if you power it up near an open window and leave it for a few minutes and then move it to its final location it works fine.

Triton Seville 7.5kW Electric Shower
Triton Seville 7.5kW Electric Shower

4.0 out of 5 stars Triton Seville 7.5 kW Electric Shower, 16 Mar. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This product was purchased when my previous Triton shower failed after 7 years. There are very few 7.5kW showers available from the bigger high street stores, so ordered this one online. It was cheaper than many others and arrived on free delivery in 3 working days.
It was relatively easy to install, but perhaps only has one or two options for cable (above, best on LHS) and water routing (below RHS or from RHS side / behind). It comes with a dual pattern head and robust chromed cable and compared to others you get alot for the c.£70 (incl delivery) I paid for mine.
The only slight drawback was the outside design and inside workings look as though they were designed in the 1990's, perhaps the unit is not quite as stylish as others, but it is a very minor point. I could not see it easily on the triton site, so wonder if it is a about to be discontinued model.
The temperature control works OK, although I only ever use it between 4 and 6 on the dial, anything else is way too hot or cold. The slightly rounded top means you can only balance 1 bottle on the top of the unit, although the tray is of a generous size.
Being 7.5kW means you don't get much flow past 5.5-6 on the dial with both elements on.
Overall it is not the most stylish of units, but a very usable unit from a well known good manufacturer and the low price really makes it worthwhile.

When I needed to replace my DVD player from my Home cinema system, I required a player with a built in decoder and 5.1 analogue RCA out (6 channel). There are very few about, the first one I found which claimed to do this only decoded Audio DVDs to 5.1 analogue output. So before Buying this one, I checked with the supplier that this one was compatible.
It arrived faster than the suggested delivery date (2 days after dispatch, 3 days after the order) and indeed played DVDs with full surround sound through the 5.1 analogue channels. It also has the other co-axial and optical connections for audio. It is multi region and comes with USB and SD card slots.
It should be noted that there is no HDMI upscaling or HDMI connection, therefore as a replacement for old equipment with older home cinema kits, it is ideal, but may not be ideal for those wanting use HDMI connections. However I think there is another player in the same range with 5.1 6 channel audio out with HDMI for little more money.
The instruction book is a little basic and no RCA or any connection cables are provided, only the mains lead.
