4.0 out of 5 stars Making Waves as well as Clouds !, 11 Sep 2012
Well done to Michael Janisch's Whirlwind Recordings label for giving these great musicians the chance to release this album. Vibist Jim Hart along with Janisch(bass) and Dave Smith(Drums) form the trio along with special guest trumpeter from the USA Ralph Alessi.
The music is at times edgy and at times striaght ahead but searches relentlessly for fresh avenues to explore. The sound is live and raw - in fact this is a bootleg recording which the musicians were so happy with they decided to release the recording for all to enjoy. And enjoy it you shall if you like your jazz edgy and innovative rather than safe and sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bearded Boogie Boys are back !, 10 Sep 2012
This review is from: La Futura (Audio CD)
I will start by saying that I love this album and that its the best music ZZT have produced since the heady days of the ninteen eighties.
The grungy fuzzbox sound has been replaced with that blues based rock 'n' roll sound of the classic "Eliminator" period. The question I am asking myself is why so long to finally get this album out on the streets ? The album kicks off with "Gotsa get paid" and theres no letting up for all ten tracks. There's a nice power ballad and the harmonica even makes an appearance on one tune.Gibbons shows the sort of blues licks that we know he's capable of but have been missing on more recent albums and his vocals, though still throaty, sound all the better without the fuzzbox background.
All in all this is a real return to form from the boys from Texas and hopefully there's another album or two of this quality left in the tank.
Boogie on !

5.0 out of 5 stars Coltrane Rules - So does Bartz !, 4 Aug 2012
It's been a few years since Bartz recorded the excellent "Soprano Stories" but with limited distribution it sadly came and went without fanfare. However, there seems to be much more of a concerted effort to get this album out to the people and thank god for it.
This album is not a Coltrane tribute per se - you won't find Giant Steps, Blue Train, Lazy bird etc but the music definitely is in the spirit of the great man which is what really counts here.
Bartz is now a seasoned performer approaching the veteran stage and his worldly experience is heard in every single note of this album. Free from heavy production values Bartz's tone is harder, more aggresive and with a greater degree of spirituality than previously heard on record.
None more so than on "I concentrate on you" where he preaches a sermon of deep spirituality and feeling. Bop is not abandoned altogether with the nifty "Birdtrane" and "Pristine" reminding you of an earlier Coltrane that many tend to overlook.Former collaborator from the seventies Andy Bey makes a vocal appearnace on "Dear Lord" but for me the pick of the album is "Dahomy Dance/Ole'" which transforms itself from gentle ballad to Latin flavoured Spiritual with masterful ease.
Bartz is definitely back and long may he continue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Country - Another great album from Cassandra, 9 July 2012
This review is from: Another Country (Audio CD)
After the disappointment (for me anyway) of Silver Pony I awaited the arrival of the is album with some excitement and it really does deliver. This is her most laid back and joyous recording since "Belly of the Sun" and has much to enjoy. The band is kept to a bare minimum with mainly just guitars and accordian and some light percussion. The stripped down effect seems to suit Cassnadra and lets her husky vocals float out front rather than be swallowed up up by an ensemble with a bigger sound.
The songs are great and none more so than "Red guitar" and "No more Blues" where the lyrics, music and the performances are just spot on.
Guitarist Fabrizio Sotti gives the whole album a different dimension with some gorgeous Flamenco'ish guitar (despite being Italian) that gives the album a different feel to all of Wilson's previous albums. Lets hope she records with him again !
This one's a gem so buy and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five gripping stars, 22 Jun 2012
This review is from: Backlash (Hardcover)
Having read all of the Anna Travis series I found this one to be of an equally high standard as its predecessors. For me its LaPlante's attention to detail and her ability to weave an intricate plot over a simple framework that got me hooked on this series. She may not be the most literary of authors but she can write a real page turner like few others can.How another reviewer can say this novel is silly and predictable is totally beyond me !
All Anna Travis fans should be ready to get their latest fix.

5.0 out of 5 stars Feel safe with the Stath, 11 May 2012
This review is from: Safe [DVD] (DVD)
This could quite possibly be Statham's best film yet. The producers have been a little more generous with the budget than the average Statham film and have had the good sense to cast a little Chinese girl in a central role. The casting of newcomer Catherine Chen is a great idea and gives everyone a reason to actually care about a someone in a film of largely unpleasant characters.
Statham though takes center stage and is on great form as always playing the sympathetic minder one minute and cold hearted killer the next.In a film full of bent cops, Chinese triads and Russian Mafia there's plenty of bodies around for Jason to dispatch to their graves at pretty regular intervals.
After the early plot developments unfold it sets things up nicely for an action packed hour that you won't forget in a hurry. If you are a Statham fan then you'll love this without a doubt; If you are looking for a thriller with more brains than brawn then perhaps look elsewhere.
A great 90 minutes entertainment courtesey of "The Stath".
Enjoy !

5.0 out of 5 stars Seeds from the underground - Sprouting with creativity., 22 Mar 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The long awaited new studio album from Detroit Altoist Kenny Garrett is finally here and worth the wait I may add. Garrett doesn't record that often but when he does he normally produces quality which is what we have here in "Seeds from the "Underground".
All tunes are written by Garrett and are influenced by the people that have influenced his career past and present. As always there are good mix of influences ranging from straight ahead jazz and spiritual through to Funk and World influences.
In comparrison to Garrett's last to studio albums, this one is less straight ahead than "Standard of Language" and more harmonically rich than "Beyond the Wall".As always ,Garrett's tone is as full and hard sounding as any altoist on the planet and i also feel there is an attempt to make his approach less boppish and more spiritual on this album. With most of the tunes being lively and spirtual and with a percussionist added to several tracks, this makes for a pleasant, varied and highly enjoyable listening experience.

These biscuits,as well as being very healthy are actually very nice too. They are made from whole grain oats so are fine if you have a sensitive stomach and are also low in sugar for those that need to watch their blood sugar level. Lastly, unlike many "Healthy" or "diet biscuits" they are actually quite tasty.Same goes for the cranberry version of the same. Enjoy !

5.0 out of 5 stars Aaaaah Relief, 12 Mar 2012
Very effective for IBS if taken 20 minutes before a meal - although i found enteric coated peppermint oil capsules just as effective and they are much cheaper alternative. Beware of being prescribed low grade equivalents to Colofac and Culpermin on the NHS - I tried them and they did NOT work !

5.0 out of 5 stars Wild Man Blues - Not very Wild but very enjoyable !, 9 Mar 2012
This review is from: Wild Man Blues (DVD)
Excellent documentry featuring Woody Allen and his jazz band's tour of Europe. This captures the great man in some interesting locations and amusing situations. To be honest, he is a fairly mediocre but highly enthusiastic clarinetist and so the tour was promoted largely on the Allen's reputation as a film maker.
There is footage from most of the major European cities - London,Paris,Rome,Madrid are all stops along the way.
As well as concert footage, the more interesting parts are of Allen's interaction with the people around him including his wife Soon-Yi,his sister Letty Aronson, his own parents(in a segment shot in New York) plus a host of other people met along the way.
The format is fairly standard for a tour/concert documentry film but made all the more interesting given that the great Woody Allen is the subject matter.
Both enlightening and entertaining.
