George Chisholm's Gentlemen Of Jazz
George Chisholm's Gentlemen Of Jazz
Price: £7.99

2.0 out of 5 stars information needed on Book mentioned in BBC Devon, 29 Mar. 2015
Jazz programme on BBC Devon mentioned a book written about George but I have only found this CD. My father was in the same bands as George and was another trombone player, Lad Busby and I would be interested in the book if there is one as George was a close friend of our family.

I had bought similar scales a few years ago and these were half the price and just as good. You can select grams, pounds or volume on them and the controls are really easy to use.

More than app with the product and the deliver.

This review is from: Cloudstreet (Paperback)
Two families who have both suffered in some way come together to live in a large ramshakle old house which was bequeathed to one of them learn how to live together.

Sam Pickles was a soft kind hearted guy who believed in the ' hairy hand of fate' and in all respects was a gambler believing that luck was with you or not and you had to accept whatever fate threw at you. One morning when he was working on a boat and not paying attention he lost his hand and so lost his job and livelihood. he and his daughter Rose feature quite significantly in 'Pickles' side of the story and Rose was probably the only one who truly understood and cared for him. But she loses faith in him when he almost ruins the family. Dolly Pickles finds Sam impossible and is thoroughly depressed with her life and wants out desperately. She takes up drink and uses the men she finds in the bars to make up for her non-existent sex life with Sam. So when one of Sams fishing partners dies and leaves him a house in a distant part of Perth they all feel they've been given a second chance.

The other family, the Lambs, were completely different from the Pickles', being firm believers in God and the healing power of hard work. The Pickles took them in as tenants in half the house as A way of earning a living. But Dolly bitterly resents the Lambs, particularly Oriel, the mother, presumably because she works hard, organises her family and rules them with a rod of iron. She starts a shop in the house and its a resounding success. It's all down to her and her husband, Lester doesn't feature very strongly at all. Oriel blames him for the accident that Fish, one of their two boys suffers when out fishing one evening. The boy nearly dies but worse, he lives and is brain damaged but it is Quick, his brother, who shoulders the guilt for his brothers misfortune which follows him most of his life.

It really is a kind of everyday soap opera but streaked with poetry, pathos and joy. It keeps you page turning for hour after hour.

It wasn't quite what I was expecting but in fact it was a rather sweet story of a young girl who falls in love with the boy who comes to their village to teach the children.

Casio Unisex Watch Casio Collection AQ-230A-7BMQYES
Price: £21.00

3.0 out of 5 stars Quick delivery but unimpressive watch, 17 April 2013
I chose this watch as someone said it looked better in real life than on the screen.

I don't know how well it performs but I didn't like the design.it looked cheap. Also I found it near impossible to after the date/time.

My husband then bought me another one.

The Swan Thieves
The Swan Thieves
by Elizabeth Kostova
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant .. Enthralling and utterly fascinating book., 8 Jan. 2013
This review is from: The Swan Thieves (Hardcover)
this was possibly the best book I have read in quite some time absolutely riveting it held me in suspense right up to the end. it was rather like a thriller... you really wanted to get to the bottom of it.
you have to find out what affected this man, brilliant painter... I found him a fascinating vibrant character from the first moment when he apparently lurches for the painting of the swan in the museum. It was hard to imagine how he had become so obsessed with painting this woman who has been dead for years and why he hadhad that moment of almost madness.
It soon became apparent that it was beatrice de Clerval who Robert kept painting and she was of course dead. But why her. Although I knew that the letters between Beatrice and Olivier must have a close link to the mystery initially I found myself wanting to skip over them I found them confusing and rather a diversion from the story. robert was himself was such a fascinating vibrant character and I just wanted to get back to the story to find out why he had locked himself into a private world .. angry and despairing ...a world where only Beatrice was present for him in his daily painting.
Kostova' s writing cleverly weaves between Roberts past, told through his women, (Kate his wife, and Mary his lover)and the story of Beatrice. She blurs the connection between past and present so that whether its Marlow and Mary or Beatrice and Oliver, the action seems to be mirroring itself.

it was an easy read but also confounding and this was what kept me obsessed to find out what connection there was between beatrice and her uncle in 1877 and Robert Oliver in the present.

Kostova brings the myth of Leda and the swan in to the fore front near the end enoch again is fascinating .. The story itself seems almost bordering on myth and at one point one of the characterso shows us a connection between Zeus and Beatrices' daughter.
I hadn't heard of Beatrice de Clerval before reading the book and it became clear why she was little heard of st the denouement of the story.
Ultimately it is a fascinating and complex story which is both myth and love stor, obsession and ultimately redemption. Fantastic writing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a well made film, 8 Jan. 2013
This review is from: Wagner 4-DVD Box Set (DVD)
I was interested to find out about Wagners life after I attended a lecture about his philosophy and affinity with Shopenhauer but the film was not as interesting as the lecture. Perhaps because it was made quite some time ago perhaps in the seventy's it seemed flat and didn't keep my attention. free film quality itself did not seem as good as modern day films of course what the characters themselves seemed hardly real. the story was spelt out in quite a flat way and did not give one the idea that these were real people.
it was also over 8 or 10 hours of film and although I was interested in finding out about wagners his life and character, I found it hard to continue to watch. perhaps this was a deliberate technique to show how life in the 1700s was so very different in wagners time but
I feel sure that if the subject were tackled again today some thing far more memorable could be achieved
