Salvador Dali Style Surrealist Melting Wall Clock
Salvador Dali Style Surrealist Melting Wall Clock

Price: £9.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and also easy to read, 23 Aug 2014

This was a present. The person who received it had been looking for a Dali style clock for ages and hadn't liked any they'd seen. This one scored me a few brownie points.

Title: Future Frequencies
Title: Future Frequencies
by Derek Woodgate
Edition: Paperback

1.0 out of 5 stars Self-indulgent and incoherent, 23 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I can't really talk much about this book as I couldn't finish it, which is a very rare event for me. It's a self-indulgent and incoherent set of opinions and poorly assembled case studies which fail to make an argument worth finishing.

Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth
Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth
by Reza Aslan
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £14.39

5.0 out of 5 stars Really well written, well researched, readable book, 23 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this book after seeing an interview of the author by the most persistently ignorant Fox News interviewer. To give her credit, it looked like she was simply asking questions she was told to ask rather than because she genuinely thought they were the best questions to put in the time available.
Reza Aslan noted in the interview that he is a Muslim married to a Christian and does not have an ax to grind about the historical evidence of Jesus of Nazareth. I should also point out here that I am a practicing Christian. As an academic work, it is a very well referenced, extremely readable book that made me stop and think many times.
Aslan makes it clear where he is reflecting common understandings and where he is offering his own views. He states that he is offering an evidence-based argument for the reader to make up his or her own mind. It is a thoughtful, objective and insightful read.

The Ark Before Noah: Decoding the Story of the Flood
The Ark Before Noah: Decoding the Story of the Flood
by Yitzchak Irving Finkel
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £17.00

4.0 out of 5 stars Really engrossing read., 23 Aug 2014

A fascinating story which takes you through some of the earliest written records still existing. Sheds a whole new light on what the ark might have been and what it would practically have been able to hold. I'd been visiting parts of Iraq near to the places mentioned in the book and it added a richness to my appreciation of the deep and wonderful ancient history of that part of the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent drive, 23 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Quiet and fast, with no discernible vibration when it's sitting on a hard surface. The only drawback was that the USB3.0 cable is a bit short and I've bought a separate metre long one which makes handling it when it's attached to the laptop a little easier.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good solid case with space for a travel mouse, 23 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
My external hard drive fits in here neatly with space for a travel mouse. Its light but robust enough to take on my business journeys. The zip is a bit stiff with the mouse inside but otherwise highly recommended.

Bipra USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE Adapter Kit with Power Adapter for 2.5/3.5/5.25 inch SATA or IDE Drive

5.0 out of 5 stars A very effective piece of kit, 23 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This worked straight out of the box. The instructions are clear, the plugs fit into the socket firmly and, unlike some other reviews suggest, they only go in one way - you'd have to really force them to plug them in incorrectly.
The power pack looks pretty standard and robust. Here again, I'm not sure why that should burn out as others have suggested, unless they've upgraded it for the version I bought.
All in all does exactly what it says it will do.

Various: Bach and Beyond (Vespers/ Missa In Illa Tempore/ Magnificat Ii)
Various: Bach and Beyond (Vespers/ Missa In Illa Tempore/ Magnificat Ii)
Price: £60.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 11 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I picked this up as an aide as to what Bach's Magnificat should sound like when it's well sung. I had, for the first time since school, signed up to sing in a choir and had no idea what I was doing. Bad choice as a guide at my level, but inspired in terms of just the joy of listening to such beautiful music so beautifully played and sung.
Other reviews have commented very well on the composers and specific pieces in detail, so I won't repeat them. Suffice to say that the CDs are all outstanding, but all pale in comparison with the CD with the various Magnificats. It has been on my CD player more than any other since I bought this box set.
A true joy to listen to. I find out more and more about the music on these CDs every time I listen to them. I'm not a musician myself, but here I can really feel how Suzuki and his team are really telling stories with their interpretations of these great pieces of music.

3.0 out of 5 stars Would be better if the instructions are clearer, 11 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This looks like an excellent tool in principle but the instructions let it down. They are too diagrammatic and it's not clear as a result how each part of the tool is supposed to be used. Notwithstanding that, it's already produced a pretty decent result on a set of scissors, once I'd worked out the best way to sharpen them.
If the instructions are clearer, it will go up by one, possibly even two stars.

You don't have to exist to work here...: ...and it may not help
You don't have to exist to work here...: ...and it may not help
Price: £1.39

4.0 out of 5 stars A surreal but believable juxtaposition of reality with a beautifully quirky romance, 11 May 2014
Tracey treats the reality we know and the surreal world she creates, literally in the gaps of our own reality, with the same simplicity of style. This means she takes the reader into places and situations where unexpected or unreal things happen without it being immediately apparent. The three puzzles which start the story, for example, are a challenge to Greville not only as tests to solve, but also to work out who, of all the boring people in his office, could have put them on the notice board. He goes for his subsequent interview and, although a little nonplussed but what happens, does his very best not to let subsequent events disturb the equilibrium he has built up in his life. After all, he has a perfectly good job, an apparently ideal girlfriend and the joy of his running, notwithstanding the dog which keeps chasing him in the park and the middle-aged lady who sits on the bench.
His new work colleagues do their best to unsettle and ignore him, save for Magnolia, whose ideas and behaviour make him wonder whether his life is as ideal and well-settled as he had thought.
What happens is part love story, part detective story, part fantasy, but always entertaining.
A declaration of interest: I am a member of the writing group that Tracey runs. I've had the privilege of watching this story unfold over the last few months. It has been great fun.
This book deserves to be read by those who enjoy a great story, simply told. It is a real treat.
