Cannot praise this book highly enough. The author, a south African conservationist, tries to rescue 7 wild elephants which have been traumatised and are violent. His huge problems and great humour make the book fascinating. He is trying to establish a game reserve in S. Africa.

the author decides to try and save what is left of the Baghdad Zoo a few weeks after the invasion of Iraq by the Americans. Most of the animals have been killed, but the survivors desperately need water, food and medication. He works against incredible odds, and recounts how he tries to overcome the problems. Very readable.

Modoc: The True Story of the Greatest Elephant That Ever Lived

5.0 out of 5 stars What an amazing elephant., 9 Nov 2013

this book completely changed my appreciation of elephants. This is a true story which I can still hardly believe is actually true, the bond between the elephant and the boy who grew up together is so strong. The elephant was born into a circus in Germany, sold to America, was ship-wrecked off India, etc, etc. I will not say any more as I could hardly put it down and will not spoil it for the next reader. Written, not particularly well, by someone who met the boy some 60 years later.

This review is from: The Last Rhinos (Paperback)
I have avidly read all three books by Laurence Anthony as I like his amusing true anecdotes of his experiences. He is a committed conservationist trying to stop animals being wantonly killed by humans, in this case the Northern White Rhino. They are illegally killed just for the horn which is made of keratin, the same type of protein which makes up our hair and finger nails. He writes of his efforts in the middle of a war in the Congo, with great humour.
