While you're reading it it feels like you're being given subtle insights and sophisticated perspectives but when you come out the other side you've just been reading a lot of ...detail.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good solid Grisham, 14 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The novelty of Grisham's warts and all approach to the rich complexities of the American legal system has worn off over the years but he can still spin a good engaging yarn.

3.0 out of 5 stars very much a modern read, 15 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A salutary tale, post modern emphasis on the arbitrariness of life, vastly forgiving of human imperfection . Clearly written by a woman

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly straightforward, 14 Jun. 2013

This review is from: RAC Car Harness, Large (Misc.)
It takes a few seconds for me and Daisy to work out what goes we're but she's quite happy wearing it. Word of caution though, she is a 16 kilo Cocker Spaniel but the 'big' size only just fits her. If you've got a full sized dog I'd say go for the biggest fitting

Clash of Empires: The Great Siege (Clash of Empires 1)
Clash of Empires: The Great Siege (Clash of Empires 1)

5.0 out of 5 stars A 'must read' for historical fiction buffs, 2 Feb. 2012
It would be easy to criticise this book for its boy wonder hero but then again many of even the best authors use this device and it's fun to go along with it.
Much more importantly Napier manages not only to compellingly and movingly describe the action, he conveys the rich world of tradition and history that the participants lived in and what it felt like to live in those times. It's a brilliant bit of historical anthropology and 'you feel like you've been there'.You' ll love it.

1.0 out of 5 stars A degenerating genre, 8 July 2011
If you like simple minded action novels with plot lines that stretch all credibility, characters who are walking cliches, and endless descriptions of chopped off arms and legs and faces smashed by shield bosses then this is the book for you. However if you are interested in credible plotting, real characterization and any real insight into the mind and culture of the Romans who invaded Britain forget it.
I read ALL the Roman Army novels and what seems to have happened is that various ex-soldiers have read the Scarrow and Cornwell novels and said 'Oh I see, the Roman Army was just like any modern western Army, with lots of butch repartee, blokey fellowship and unrecognised valour, except they wore skirts. I can do that.'
Well they can't, and as a result the genre is steadily degrading. Be warned
