Medusa is a story of a struggle for survival in a dangerous world of the future. I found it a gripping read from the first page to the last.
The setting for the story is a seemingly endless ocean where spirited, courageous Lissa Two, thief of the Underlevels, is captain of a super-ship with amazing, special powers. Talbot’s writing is so skilful, so vibrant, evoking all the senses, that not only did I quickly get a mind picture of this perilous watery world, but could also readily imagine what the characters were experiencing both emotionally and physically; for example, the repulsively weird sensation in donning ‘The Suit’, which Lissa Two needs to wear at times of extreme danger and risk.
The story moves along at a swift pace with the aid of snappy, realistic dialogue - one of the many strengths of Talbot’s writing. As well as helping to bring the characters to life, it also plays its part in conjuring up the world in which Medusa is set - a world of gigantic sea steads; marauding pirates; deadly water-plague and menacing pico clouds.
During the course of the novel, many intriguing questions are posed, for which Lissa Two, and the reader, need an answer, including: Who destroyed the sea stead Proteus? Who made Connie and what is contained in the ‘walled-in’ file? Is the mysterious Hattan who fell from the sky to be trusted? As for Drex Two, apparently devoted to Lissa Two, and his father, Drex One, who ruthlessly runs the Underlevels, what part will they play in the unfolding drama? To begin with, we have, in the words of one of the characters, ‘insufficient data to determine.’ But all is ultimately revealed and the denouement is heartrending but at the same time satisfying.
An exciting and compelling read from an accomplished writer.

I found this book really gripping. The author has a knack for building up tension, and making you wonder what on earth is going on; you have to keep on reading to find out. He has a knack too for choosing apposite vocabulary and turns of phrase. There is an atmospheric sense of place throughout the book so that I had a vivid picture in my mind of the mysterious Eight Mile Island. I thought the main character, Dylan, was realistically drawn, as were the other characters surrounding him.
