4.0 out of 5 stars Life is hard, 24 Jun. 2013
The second books doesn't bring much improvement to the lives of this unfortunate family, though the author's determination to get an education and to find some happiness shows her strength of character. Read all four books to follow the author from the age of 11 to her early twenties.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard times, 24 Jun. 2013
The family's fall into hard times seems to effect the author most of all, though everyone suffers. First of four books, and the most harrowing because the children are clearly neglected. Should be read by those seeking to dismantle the welfare state.

4.0 out of 5 stars Keep going!, 24 Jun. 2013
Both through the adversity of the Second World War and through the series of 4 books. The author had a harrowing early life and describes her experiences and those of her family with the city of Liverpool as a constant backdrop. Good for those whose own memories may cover the period and for younger people who have always experienced the support of the welfare state. Should be compulsory reading for those who think modern society is too soft.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't give up!, 24 Jun. 2013
This review is from: Liverpool Miss (Kindle Edition)
This girl had the most miserable life but is now a successful author and fulfilled person. Many of the descriptions of the family's poverty pre-welfare are upsetting but salutary reading. I'm glad she found happiness. It would be good to know whether her feckless parents enjoyed the benefits of the 1950's welfare state in their old age. Health care, teeth etc! I wonder if there is another book which will tell the story for the rest of the family?

4.0 out of 5 stars Roy Grace adapts to fatherhood, 24 Jun. 2013
Well written. Plot a bit uneven in parts with obligatory gory bits. Overall a good read. Need to get on with "Sandy" plot line though!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing and entertaining, 24 Jun. 2013
Well written, good plot, convincing characterisation. I have read earlier novels by this author with this protagonist, and enjoyed them. This one is the best yet.
