The copy I received was slightly past middle-age and looked rather tired. The packaging was slightly torn as well. I would describe it as well-worn second hand and rather expensive for the condition.

This review is from: Rififi [1954] [DVD] (DVD)
A film noir classic that I never tire of watching. If there is a Heaven for lovers of great movies, Rififi will surely be there to enjoy into eternity. Simply brilliant in its treatment of desire, human weakness of all description, greed, and love. The title music is wonderful, too. As others have said, the action takes place to the inspiring backdrop of 1950s Paris. Were I to lose my copy of the film I would immediately buy it again.

This review is from: War Is A Racket (Kindle Edition)
War is A Racket was first published in 1935. The author, Smedley D. Butler, a retired major general in the US Marine Corps, draws on his experience of warfare to compare and contrast the lot of the poor ordinary soldier; whose role is to do and die; and those with commercial interests who do very nicely from the supply of military hardware and essential supplies to sustain conflict. He argues that if these were nationalised so that big profits could not be made by individuals and companies the threat of war would recede dramatically.
One has only to look at the invasion of Iraq in 2003 to see that Vice President Cheney had been previously heavily associated with Halliburton, a US company that was awarded major contracts for the redevelopment of Iraq in the aftermath of the war to see that what was true then is just as true today. We need more Smedley D. Butlers.
The book is quite short and easily readable in half and hour.

4.0 out of 5 stars Citizens or Subjects?, 21 Nov. 2013

Thomas Paine's words are as eloquent and relevant today as they were in the eighteenth century. Thanks to him, and others like him, Americans framed a society for themselves that, in principle, deemed that all would be equal. We in Britain have yet to show such courage, and continue to maintain an unelected hereditary monarchy that deems us all to be subjects and not citizens of our own country. Well worth reading for anyone interested in developing a fairer, more just society.

The Grand Delusion: Britain After Sixty Years of Elizabeth II
The Grand Delusion: Britain After Sixty Years of Elizabeth II

4.0 out of 5 stars The Grand Delusion, 29 Oct. 2013
Professor Haseler's book is a superb examination of Britain and the British during the sixty year reign of Elizabeth II. It is a work that considers in great detail the nation's political fantasies, obsessions and realities. It highlights the enduring fantasy that has continuded to beat in the hearts of the nation's ruling elite (Monarch and politicians in particular)that, in spite of the loss of its empire, Britain remains economically, politically, and militarily a major player on the world stage; ready at a moment's notice to give Johnny Foreigner a good hiding if he steps out of line. This view, in which the nation's leaders have, in furtherance of their own delusions, preferred the position of the USA's dogsbody to their rightful place as a leading and committed member of the European Union, has taken the nation to war with a country that did not threaten Britain in any way, and has sustained an overblown monarchy that forever ensures that the British are encouraged to look to their past rather than the future.
There is no doubt that the Professor wishes to see the abolition of the monarchy. The fantasy, again, is that Britain's political elite always refer to the monarchy as being 'constitutional', and yet Elizabeth II, monarch by accident of birth, was never elected by the people, who have no say whatsoever in determnining the identity of the person who shall be their head of state. Not only that, there is a convention that the position of the monarch is never discussed by the people's elected representatives in Parliament.
This is most definitely not a book that flag-waving singers of Rule Britannia with right-wing tendencies and a passion for the Queen and her family would wish to receive for Christmas. They would be horrified by it. However, for anyone who believes that the time has come for the British to face the future secure in the knowledge of their rightful place in the world, and with a democratically elected head of state who is chosen by the people, then this book is both enormously readable and enlightening.

I had a particular reason for wanting to see this film as my son, who is learning disabled, also suffers from the same problems as the main character in the movie. I have to say that the storyline is dealt with in typical US fashion. What I mean by that is that like all social issue problems in US movies it has to have the obligatory happy ending; Forest Gump and Rain Man spring instantly to mind. Oh for the days of realist British movies of the late 1950s and early 1960s, such as Room at the Top, Sapphire, and Victim.
Russell Crowe is the mathematical genius who is haunted by visitations from characters who only exist in his mind. At times in his life one character in particular takes over and drives Crowe over the edge. Given time and the love of a good woman, Crowe not only comes to terms with his demons, but is able to manage them so that they become part of the background cast as Crowe resurrects his life and moves on to peer and public acclaim. Despite my earlier comment about US movies, I found it gripping and entertaining in equal measures.

I purchased this product for my Kindle 3G. It's a stylish piece of kit and looks good. It fulfils the same function as the hard back on a book. One opens it, the Kindle lights up and the show begins. I'm not the first, however, to point out that when one closes the cover the power remains on, so your battery life would run down unless you remember to first turn off the Kindle before closing the book. Am I glad I bought the cover? Without hesitation I would say 'Yes'.
