5.0 out of 5 stars A must!, 6 Feb 2013

This review is from: Horowitz plays Scriabin (Audio CD)
This CD is an absolute must for any Scriabin lover. The recordings of op. 8 no. 12 (of which there are two) are absolutely astounding. The highlight of the CD, though, is the final track which is Vers la Flamme. This is THE best recording of Vers la Flamme in the world, hands down. No one has yet better the absolute sheer intensity of Horowitz playing of this piece. An essential CD!

3.0 out of 5 stars Incomplete, 29 July 2012

Though Daniel Barenboim's performance of these Nocturnes are gorgeous, the CD suffers from one fatal flaw - it is incomplete. If you are looking at this CD because you want to buy all of Chopin's Nocturnes on 1 CD then look elsewhere. This only has 11 of them out of a total of 21! I bought this CD and was disappointed. If you are just looking for more Barenboim recordings or something to have in the background, perhaps studying or relaxing then this should be a winner for you!

4.0 out of 5 stars Paganini Capricci, 29 July 2012

This is a good CD but don't be fooled by all the hype about this CD. Most people on here will be buying it for the 24th Caprice so really I am only reviewing that track. It is good but leaves much to be desired especially in the pizzicato detail and strength. I would personally recommend James Ehnes recording of this CD as I have seen him perform it in concert and it was spellbinding. It was so impressive that he got a clap midway through the performance, just after the pizzicato variation. For all other tracks, they are good and reliable but not best for sitting down to listen to.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best CD I have, 29 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the single best CD I own out of a vast classical music collection. I cannot stress enough how fantastic this CD is. It is conducted by Robert Craft, a noted Stravinsky expert, who Stravinsky himself once described as his ears. The best track is the Finale of the Firebird and the performance of Petrushka is breathtaking. Buy this CD!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great, 29 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This CD leaves much to be desired when it comes to the first three tracks - the three movements from Petrushka - but overall this is a very good CD. I would recommend buying this CD for the 5th track, Tango. It is the slowest recording I've heard of this track but it is the most expressive. The Bartok is performed excellently, really bringing out the percussiveness of the piano.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate in Ravel piano music, 29 July 2012
I have had this CD for a long time now, going on 5 years probably and I can honestly say that never before have I heard such delicacy in the playing of Ravel's piano music. Collard, being such a master of French music, knows how to bring out the essence of Ravel in his performance. Of particular note is his performance of Jeux D'Eau (the piece that got me interested in Ravel in the first place). There is not a bad word I can say on this product. Thoroughly recommended!
