Somehow I had missed the original productions, probably clashed with somethng else. I was pleasantly surprised and delighted by this compendium and the "extras" give a very interesting insight into the ethos of "Carry on". Well done to all.

I have seen it many times and always find something new to pick up on. The acting is top class and the plot stands watching again and again. A must for b&w buffs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trip down Memory Lane, 8 Oct 2010
This review is from: Picnic [DVD] [1955] (DVD)
For those of us who haunted cinemas in the 1950's this is a real memory jogger and still entertains. William Holden and the enchanting Kim Novak give performances that span the years.

5.0 out of 5 stars The curse of power, 9 Oct 2009
I first saw this movie in my teens and it has always been stored in my memory bank. The story of absolute power corrupting absolutely is as true today as it was 60 years ago when the movie was made and indeed since the days of the Garden of Eden. A very good movie that stands the test of time. No wonder we don't trust politicians whatever their hue.

Evil Under The Sun [DVD] [1982]

4.0 out of 5 stars A good night in!, 9 Oct 2009
Another of the Ustinov "Poirot's". He is at his delightful inquisitive best and has a grand supporting cast. Whether your mental picture of Hercule Poirot is Ustinov or not, his was a characterisation that bears watching. Value for an evening's entertainment and for keeping.

4.0 out of 5 stars Creaky but nice!, 9 Oct 2009
This edition of the Christie classic is a classic in itself. The acting and the quality of the reproduction is a bit creaky by modern standards but then so am I. A "must" if this movie was part of your youth and recommended for those who want to find out how it was.

4.0 out of 5 stars A chance to forget today's woes, 9 Oct 2009
Many of the actors are no longer with us but their talent lives on. A well known tale but if you like Agatha Christie's stories and Ustinov's 'Hercule Poirot' then this is for you. A good evening's entertainment for a cold winter's night.

Gods and Generals
Gods and Generals
by Jeff Shaara
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Gods and Generals, 1 Feb 2009
This review is from: Gods and Generals (Paperback)
I had seen the film which I had enjoyed very much and thought that I would read the book. I was not disappointed. A well researched, easy to read novel of the early days of the American Civil War it puts flesh on the bare bones of history; the beliefs, hopes and aspirations of many of the leading participants in the war are brought vividly to life. If you like historical novels then this is for you.
