I bought this on blu ray as I previously had it on VHS. The picture quality was not markedly better, the sound was good. Nice to own, looks a bit creaky but was before the age of CGI, no bad thing.

OK so this must be a mistake. I just bought this, as part of a two CD for 15 deal. On downloading, it turns out I got the whole of Live from KCRW too, although this doesn't show on the listing, well chuffed as the latter is probably the album of the year for Nick Cave fans.

It is beautiful of course, you'd have to be dead not to love this guy.

The Flying Carpet
The Flying Carpet
by Richard Halliburton
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Tales from a simpler, bigger world, 3 Dec 2013
This review is from: The Flying Carpet (Hardcover)
I am appalled that the only review of this book was written by someone who has not even read the book.

I found my copy in an Irish hotel, where it was part of a decorating scheme to make the place look clubby. I could not believe how rich, thrilling and well written it was and stayed in my hotel room until I had devoured it.

It is gung ho, it is embroidered, romanticised and no doubt an incomplete account. But these guys (RH and his pilot, Moye Stephens) are on aviation websites for one of the very first global circumnavigations, it took 18 months to visit 34 countries, they did it in an open top biplane. They met cannibals, were the first plane ever to fly into Tehran, nearly crashed over Timbuktoo, flew across Africa in tandem with a German aviatrix who later married the German Formula 1 champion. As for the charge of "casual racism" made by the reviewer I mention above, well they are open mouthed at other people's cultures and Halliburton becomes obsessed with the Sufi poet Hafiz and loves the ancient seat of Persian culture, the city of Shiraz, he also spins some great tales about Petra too. His wonder at other cultures and respect for them is striking in a work of this generation.

Halliburton was the rock star of his day, his radio shows were syndicated across the USA and he remains one of the best travelled modern North Americans ever and a great role model for American kids. Most of his travels were on foot, he was a great athlete and could walk many miles in a day, usually in a white suit.

His death was as colourful as his life and came much too soon, he died aged 39. He was sailing his own Chinese Junk back from Hong Kong to the World's Fair in San Fransisco a couple of years before the outbreak of WW2, dodging the blockading Japanese navy, when a typhoon struck, sinking the boat and killing the crew without trace. His last message read something like "Having a wonderful time. Wish you were here instead of me."

He lived more in 39 years than most people do in three score and ten. This book shows him at his best, as a traveller and as story teller. I wish there were more people like him around now, in our neutered, dry and controlled world.

LaCie LaCinema Mini HD Connect
LaCie LaCinema Mini HD Connect

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it, 29 Nov 2013

This device works really well. The menu is attractive, simple and easy to read. The remote is small but functional, but does need the lights up to use on movie nights.

Occasionally struggles to cope, needing a reboot to make it settle down.

Looks gorgeous, love the blue LED and piano black finish.

Only problem was jitter on high quality bluray rip, over 8GB file size, which it could not play. Oh and music off the drive sounds distorted all the time, so it is useless as a music streamer, at least in my system.

I don't think they make this anymore???

WD TV Live Media Player

2.0 out of 5 stars Slow, annoying, maybe a failed unit?, 29 Nov 2013

I bought this to replace an ageing La Cie Cinema device (that struggles sometimes on start up and will not display a movie despite rebooting - never used to). The WD was connected to a 2TB local Hitachi Enterprise HD, i.e. the best you can get.

Straight out of the box there were problems. The LED on the front of the WD never stopped flashing. After about an hour or more it seemed happy enough and displayed the home screen but did not respond to the remote control, the legend at the top of the screen said "compiling media database" or some-such nonsense. Well, it never stopped compiling and never gave a proper view of media files - it always showed 0 movies and 0 music files. Searching for music files by name was impossible. It played music well, sounded good but then the screensaver comes on and the only way to get rid of it is to power off and reboot, which means it starts compiling again, in a never ending cycle of unresponsiveness and frustration. There was no option to shuffle the music directory or select a playlist - so these still cannot replace a computer or iPod playing through the AV receiver and it is oddly less smart than even a cheap CD player which is "made for ipod" like my Yamaha.

All this compiling meant my HD was working really hard, the noise it made I have never heard when playing even large movie files over the La Cie device. I was concerned that the WD may shorten HD life significantly.

Movie performance once the device settled down was good, it played MKV, FLV, MP4 and AVI files well and ability to fast forward in every format was a bonus, something my old player struggles to do.

The remote - when it worked - was nice to use, a good size with nice soft / grippy plastics on the underside.

I never bothered hooking it up to the network as I have a smart blu-ray player which does iPlayer etc. I noted that the WD does not come with any software so I don't know how they expect you to turn your computer into a media server, I guess you need DLNA software that the WD recognises??? If that's correct don't expect it to be in the box.

Conclusion
I sent it back after 48 hours, I just cannot be bothered waiting for something that should "just work", you settle down to a movie and then wait 5 to 10 minutes before it decides if it will work. I am very disappointed but happy enough to keep my La Cie device until the tech improves or even I just buy a TV that can handle a HD (mine can only do USB content).

As ever, Amazon's returns procedure was superb, guaranteeing I'll never buy electronics from anywhere else.

This two disc box set is a bargain. Well packaged, and nice to own / give. It is almost bound to contain genres of music that buyers will not already own, from euro pop to spooky haunting choral works plus original soundtrack elements. Best CD of the year so far. Mine played on CD and computer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Muddy, claustrophobic, rip-off lead, useless on public transport, 30 Jun 2013
I bought these sight unseen based on the reviews and they were cheap in the Superfi sale. I wish I hadn't. They are open backed which means all your noise spills out and makes people tap you on the shoulder, never good in the morning commute or even worse on a flight. Next issue is that outside noise comes in.

Then the sound quality - it is rotten, the bass is too heavy, the mid range is muddy and undefined, there are few highs, the whole thing sounds dull. People talk about running them in, well I tried this for 48 hours running iTunes in the background thru the phones, they sounded no better for it, they are nasty.

Another big problem is that the detachable mini-jack lead - of which there are two supplied - has a proprietary interface where it meets the headphones, meaning you have to use one of AKG's leads, which cost a tenner for one that "lasted a week" from a pattern supplier on Amazon or almost 30 from AKG, this is a joke.

What to buy instead: The best phones I have had for years are Goldring NS1000 noise cancelling, closed back, they suppress plane and train noise really well, detachable standard lead, nice carry case, bouncy rock phones, a bit bass heavy even so but they are streets ahead of these horrible AKG's.
