5.0 out of 5 stars Album of the year (really!), 24 Nov. 2006

I go through spates of buying music looking for something new. Having some old Lee Perry albums, and liked but never really rated them. I tagged this on the end of an order on the basis of the George Clinton remix, but had low expectations. I am blown away - this is a musically excellent and coherent album. The variety is stunning, yet album fits together without a weak track. Although the reggae/dub heritage is there, even those whom dislike reggae will find this a joyful experience. Sure the lyrics are eccentric, but there's an intelligence to them and I can't give you enough encouragement to Add to Shopping Basket.

This is a great album, but I was disappointed as the DVD has only footage featured on the 'I Know I'm Not Alone' DVD. The DVD here is simply a two minute trailer plus all the extras from the UK released DVD. You are better off to buy the UK album and the film separately.

This is a solid workout from Gil's band, dating from the lates 80's to my guess. The Bottle and B-Movie are not as strong as the superiors, but out of issue Tales of GSH.
Be warned that 'GSH - Greatest Hits Live' and 'Save the Children' are both edits from this concert, with both fewer and edited tracks.
The band is class, the music is fine and the lyrics are ... well the lyrics are Gil.

I've tried to get this book and sent an email to the publishers:
In 2003 you published The Last Holiday by Gil Scott-Heron. Will it become available again, e.g. in paperback format. I would very much like this book.
They responded:
Unfortunately it was never published - it has since been cancelled.
I guess Gil going to prison for a year didn't help get the book finished! Sorry about the rating - Amazon made me do it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Mellow Introversion, 26 April 2005
E has produced a fine mellow album that touches at the human soul. I was prepared for an epic, six years in the production, wrought with angst over family deaths journey. Instead it's lighter & dreamier, the lyrics suggestive, but not explicit. Clocking at 78 minutes, it could also be squeezed on a single CD. Well worth the wait and well worth a few listens to fully appreciate.

5.0 out of 5 stars ONA - Prince in rare form, 17 Dec. 2002
One Nite Alone this is not. This is Prince and the band I full effect. Opening in jazz groove with The Rainbow Children through to Xenophobia - the kicking horns and superb musicianship are evident to the max. The concert kicks through-out with a great set from Prince at the piano.
The aftershow (disk 3) is raw and unpolished, with Prince demonstrating that his is indeed one of the greatest guitarists around. Jimi Hendrix has Voodoo Chile, Eddie Hazel has Maggot Brian, now add Prince's live version of Joy in Repetition. A fourth disk is not mentioned in any of the packaging, the studio album One Nite Alone. 35 minutes of Prince at the piano.
This is an excellent band lead by one of the world's all time great performers, essential listening. This is not a 'greatest hits' live package - this is an innovative artist, back to his best and in rare form. Prince is keeping the funk alive.
Oh and the poster and tour programme style booklet are nice to!

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality new Prince album breaks the mould, 16 Nov. 2001
This review is from: The Rainbow Children (Audio CD)
A spiritual album. It has 17 tracks that go from the jazz of the title track, to rock interules and the funky 1+1+1=3. The expected single: The Work Pt1, is one of the poorer tracks, but interesting as it was recorded 'live' in the studio with no post-production or dubbing. The album is held together by a deep narrators voice, that is odd to begin with - but soon becomes part of the soundscape. A good buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful set, 6 Mar. 2001
This review is from: Winter in America (Audio CD)
This sees Gil in thoughtful mood. From the opening calling for the unity within Americas black population, to the intensly proud 'Rivers of my Fathers'. Gil shows a lot of domestic love in the bulk of the albums songs. This album of course features two Scott-Heron classics - the funky 'The Bottle' cutting about alcoholism and the raw, prophetic 'H2O GATE Blues' in which Gil slams the Nixon administration 17 months before Nixon's resignation.
Gil has the rare ability of a social commentator not to judge or preach - but shows anger and humour. He breaks down problems by pitching himself as the victim. All these traits can be seen here.
Make sure you buy TVT Records re-released copy as this contains 4 bonus live tracks. Including the title track, which does not appear on the original but on the equally excellent 'First Minute of a New Day' album.
