2.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the 99% fitting claim. Check the VESA dimensions of your TV first!, 31 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A nice product but does it really fit 99% of TVs in the 17" - 37.5" range? It may well fit a high proportion of TVs but I suspect this claim is spurious and untested with no data to support it. As the wallplate wasn't wide enough I ended up sawing it in two in order to get the required width - not perfect but it worked. Hence the review title.

Alfred Hitchcock: The Icon Years
Alfred Hitchcock: The Icon Years

Edition: Paperback
Price: £11.50

2.0 out of 5 stars Shame. A potentially useful primer, spoiled by numerous silly errors., 28 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book summarises Hitchcock's career from Psycho onwards looking at the difficulties of dealing with the legacy and expectation following this landmark film. It includes key facts relating to each of his final films and the film ideas that didn't go into production.
It's tone is of a light read that I would suggest would work well as a primer for GSCE / A level students.

Unfortunately the book is littered with typographic errors and poor phrasing that would have benefited from a good proof reader. The reproduction quality of the photos is also only adequate.

Thankfully, I got it for a basement price so I am content with the product but I'd be miffed if I'd paid full price for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Concise Hitchcock., 1 Jun. 2015
This review is from: Alfred Hitchcock (Hardcover)
This is a well written, easy read covering the main elements of Hitchcock's life and career. I now have over 60 books on Hitchcock covering specific phases, relationships, films and focus and so there was little new of great interest revealed here to me. Nevertheless, during his chronology, Ackroyd expresses a good deal of interesting thoughts on his admiration of Hitchcock's successes and his appreciation of his failures. He also expresses his candid views on some of Hitchcock's personal traits, but all without getting too gushing or vindictive.

Overall, I would heartily recommend this as a solid introduction or as a gift to someone who wants a thorough, yet concise overview of the man's life and career. For me, Patrick McGilligan's Alfred Hitchcock: A Life in Darkness and Light remains the gold standard of all the Hitchcock overviews / biographies. However, this book at a quarter of the length is a worthy contender.

1.0 out of 5 stars 5 Star Film but a 1 Star product. Don't buy this 2 disc - "Special" Edition, 14 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is of course a great, landmark film and is worth 5 stars. I have watched it many times and therefore I looked forward to seeing all the extras in this 'special edition'. Even better, I bought it used, in great order for £1 - a bargain................. but what a let down!

Despite all the space available over 2 discs, this edition merely has the film (with a poor quality print at that) on Disc 1 while on Disc 2 there is less than 50 minutes of average extras previously available on other 1 disc versions. No new 'special' extra documentaries, no 'making of' featurette, commentaries, photos, notes. Nothing! A waste of resources. A shameful piece of marketing. A disappointment. I'm fuming, but then ......... we all go a little mad sometimes!

Fantastic..
Great songs, great band, great production - much better than the version previously issued as Blind Sighted Faith. Buy both versions if you wish but this is the best.

Hmm. Great songs - Great Band. However, after hearing the re-mixed edition of this album issued under the title 'Follow the Road', this version comes in very much in second place. Purchase the other version. It's much slicker!

3.0 out of 5 stars Fair. It's what you should expect for the price., 8 Sept. 2014
I recently witnessed one of these bought for one of my beginner students. It seemed like a promising package, but what did she get?
Looks - Yeah, quite smart actually, but it will no doubt suffer the curse of all black guitars soon - unsightly greasy finger marks! Invest in some polish!
Sound - OK-ish. Sounds like a £35-ish guitar
Action (the height of the strings above the fretboard) - this one was a bit too high for comfort past the 5th fret but that may not concern many a beginner. There was no buzz or rattle. I advised reducing the height difference by planing the bridge pin down a bit.
Tuning pegs - inconsistently stiff, but easily sorted by adjusting with a screwdriver
The 'guitar case' - Rubbish. It's a flimsy guitar shaped bag - it offers no protection (and the tag on the zip was pulled off almost immediately)
Strap - thin but quite adequate
Replacement Strings - Not seen but I'd guess they are very cheap. Buy a decent set. This may help improve the sound.

It's described as 'student starter quality' and that is fair. You get all the main bits you need to get started minus a capo and an electronic tuner.

Guitars in this price range will not be of the greatest quality and individually can be notoriously variable. On another day, you might get one with a lower action (and not rattling), but it's pot-luck. Don't expect the world for £35. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for and this one was okay for the money. P.S. If cash is tight, try looking around for something better quality secondhand.

4.0 out of 5 stars ..or more accrurately, episodes of Island Records, but not a complete history., 1 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a lovely coffee table book featuring episodes about arguably Britain's finest record label. Separate articles on key elements in Island's first 50 years (early ska, Witchseason, ZTT, etc) tell a good story on this multi-faceted label. Lots of lovely artwork too. For me though, as a history package, it is marred by the lack of a chronological overview. A discography would have been helpful too. 0verall though, pretty good.

4.0 out of 5 stars A tight hold on a guitar but not great for smaller instruments, 19 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I ordered four of these at under £2 each - a bargain!
They hold the strings on my guitars nice and tightly , but, universal? .............

Warning - On smaller instruments such as ukuleles and mandolins the capo tends to restrict my hand movements behind the neck so it is difficult to play some chords. That might be down to my own style, but I cannot fully recommend this type of design for non-guitar use.
