2.0 out of 5 stars Mitchum dubbed, 3 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bob Mitchum's voice has been dubbed by a spanish actor (talking english), the effect is quite comical and very distracting.

the aspect ratio seems ok, but the transfer is very poor.

Saw this at Frightfest this year then bought the DVD, a reallly smart, bloody horror thriller. An elevator movie done really well.

This has all I look for in a film, great story with good characters, funny, moving, and. .. Er zombies. A truly original take on the genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Imposter v The Chameleon, 21 Aug. 2012
This review is from: The Chameleon [DVD] (DVD)
This is a brilliantly crafted, chilling film. It is actually the same story as the new docu-movie The Imposter which is currently doing the rounds. And that one doesn't have Famke Janssen in it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tense thriller, and more..., 24 Sept. 2010
I saw this at the cinema recently and was very impressed. Having always been a fan of Herzog and Lynch I was interested to see how much influence Lynch might of had on the film in his role as producer. The answer is, I think, a fair amount. The film is unmistakably 'Herzog' in the characterization and story with definate echoes of his classic work, notably Aquirre. Yet Lynch's influence is extremely apparent at times creating a surreal sheen to the proceedings (there's even a creepy dwarf bit!)

All this goes to create an extremely entertaining film which leaves you with plenty to ponder afterward.

A quick note on the cast - Willem Dafoe gives one of his best and empathetic performances in years. Uldo Kier crops up in a brilliant cameo role - but the star is Michael Shannon who is simply excellent, he's really turning into one of the best character actors around.

In a nutshell, the film delivers a great, tense police/hostage/siege thriller but also has a sly humour and intelligence sadly lacking from most mainstream fare.

5.0 out of 5 stars Imaginative and funny, 13 July 2010
I watched this with my young nephews and they loved it. It really harks back to the quality Disney adventures I remember when I was a kid. Really good effects, a decent story and a fair amount of humour for the adults too! Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ranks alongside the best, 25 Jun. 2010
This review is from: Charlie Valentine [DVD] (DVD)
I really liked this hard-nosed, gangster crime thriller. It has enough style and flair and cool set pieces to rank alongside The Limey, Harry Brown, Carlito's Way etc

5.0 out of 5 stars 'I haven't had a bowel movement in months', 25 Jun. 2010
This comedy drama has a great cast - obviously Matthew Perry is synonymous with playing Chandler in friends - here he impressively shows a much more subtle and mature style to his performance. He's supported excellently by the underrated Ben Foster, Ginnifer Goodwin and even Hilary Swank. It's a comedy that centres around family with flavours of Royal Tenebaums, the awkwardness of Curb Your Enthusiasm and echoes of The Savages - if that's your thing then this is a must see.

5.0 out of 5 stars An unhinged & true story, 25 Jun. 2010
This review is from: Penance [DVD] (DVD)
This is a horror/thriller which is disturbingly based on real events! Much has been made of the level of graphic violence contained in the film, and whilst this is true it works with its claustrophobic sense of creeping dread and portrait of a particularly unhinged psychopathic doctor. Not easy viewing but effective all the same. Has echoes of the recent underground smash The Human Centipede.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paradise Lost meets Dead Calm, 25 Jun. 2010

A really cool thriller, sort of Paradise Lost meets Dead Calm. Has enough twists and gruesome turns to keep you guessing, a few great shocks and a very easy on the eye cast!
