Not only a film for history lovers, but also great for people interested in 19th century social life: A great period production.
Does not have to hide behind the other great Danish miniseries like Borgen, The Killing and The Bridge.

5.0 out of 5 stars You get 3 modern produced (CGI Effects, reenacted scenes) in one package., 10 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Series 1: Liberators, The soldiers of the red Army (4 disc's)
Full of resources for miniature builders of Airplanes, tanks, ships, artillery, uniforms and so on.
A good insight, of how the Soviet army, air force and navy operated on a tactical scale and strategical scale.
Series 2: Leningrad (3 Disc's)
The struggle of surviving 3 years of Siege.
With many eyewitness interviews, reenactments, and information tables.
I have to caution, some of the footage (original and CGI) are not for the faint of heart.
Series 3: Russian battles (3 Disc's)
It's only here, that some viewers could have voiced concerns about "Russian Propaganda".
Nevertheless, the production value is high, with well performed reenactments and CGI effects.
It's a Russian production, but not loaded with overbearing "propaganda" as claimed by another viewer.
We have to look at the facts, leave prejudice behind us, and take a fresh look on battles we have only known from "western" point of views. That is good, it makes us research the topic with renewed interest.

2.0 out of 5 stars Does not rise to the classic novel, nor to an action history flick like Braveheart, 30 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Directors overdoes the minimalistic approach, so that it does look like a low budged feature.
The action scenes come across as too tame, specially since we have been spoiled by productions like 'The Tudors', 'The Borgias',
'Spartacus', 'Pillars of the earth' and so on. This a 2013 production looks more like a 1970'sh film.
Also the film has the feel of being too sanitized, and too much aligned with today's political correctness.
If you like to see good movies about the the Great Peasant uprising of 1525, watch (available on Amazon.ca)
1.) Thomas Muentzer
2.) Koenig der letzten Tage (Christoph Waltz) directed by Tom Toelle 1991
and
3.) Death of the White Stallion

1.0 out of 5 stars 2 older releases put on one disk, 19 Dec. 2013
There is no analysis comparing 2 different types of dictatorships, if that's what you as the buyer may expect.
The Russian Revolution in Color is pretty good, it's about the Kronstadt Sailors and takes place between 1917 to 1921.
Fascism in color is a very superficial Documentary without any depth, and boring. Not as good as "third Reich in color".

1.0 out of 5 stars Way to expansive for recycled material., 16 Dec. 2013
This documentary only uses old and recycled material, that has been seen in many other documentaries. It does not justify the high price you as a customer has to dish out. The narration for the mildly interested History fans, has the effect of a sleeping pill, nothing new and exciting to be learned here. I only give it 1 star, for the fans that need an introduction to this theater of war, that where not exposed to other productions, dealing with the eastern front,or as the Russians call it: The Great Patriotic War". And of course for viewers that feel only comfortable with American or British narrations. But I believe they get cheated here too.
If you want to venture out, there are the better Documentaries "The Unknown War", "Blood upon the Snow", "Death on the eastern front", "World War 2 - The Eastern Front (Region 2 from UK)" but much better and more elaborate : "RED ARMY" (Liberators of the Red Army) released by the UK Discovery Channel. If you feel very curious I highly recommend "Soviet Storm: WW2 in the East", A high production Documentary, most modern appliction of CGI special effect, mixed with reenacted scenes, and original footage. The only problem , this Documentary is only available in Russian language on DVD.

Being sought in the Czech Republic, by a motley crew of Ukrainian gangsters, who pride themselves in utter ruthlessness and mean spirits, our protagonist gangsters Boss's sister of Kiev (Ukrainian Capital, needs to be hijacked from Gypsy Pimps in Prague. The Ukrainian rival gangster group need her, to regain "respect".
The whole movie is laced with "Political incorrectness" and crude black humor, like we are used to from other recent Russian gangster movie productions, like Bimmer (BMW, Dead Man's bluff, Brother 1, + 2. The transition from a washed out hooker on heroin to a hit-women is deliciously portrait by the actress Natalya Romanycheva.

Hardened Criminals are being deported and dumped off an arctic island.
Left with basic survival gear, food, and building mayerials, they have only one chance of survival: Getting civilized.
A race of a few, against many hopelessly unsocial individuals with barbaric tendencies.
The race against time and hopelessness is portrait in a suspenseful fashion, with believable good Russian actors, that are virtually unknown in the West.
Many new Russian Movies have me pleasantly surprised, so I've seen many over the last few years, even without subtitles. There is nothing in the West to compare them with, except the ones from the "post apocalyptic" production line, like THE ROAD, WALKING DEAD series, and so on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, there was Jazz behind the Iron Curtain, 6 Aug. 2013
If you truly enjoyed GREASE, SWING KIDS, SATURDAY NIGHT LIFE, than this movie is for you.
For the people interested in how life was behind the Iron Curtain, this one will let you have a glimpse of it.
You may not be familiar with the Actresses & Actors, only Russians voted them Super Star status's. Because the western media seems closed to their productions.
But I can assure you, they are of the highest quality. Having grown up in the 50's,I felt transported back in time. People in the west do not know, that life behind the Iron Curtain could be other than grey. I remember visiting east German relatives (I was born in west Germany), who looked forward to dance through the night, to swing and jazz tunes. Sometimes they went to the Mecklenburg lake beaches, meeting young russian and polish (Girls & Boys from the local military bases) hipsters. I remember the Girls being dressed in those beautiful petticoat dresses, and woww, how they could dance. The music was simply played back by crankable record players, or young Russians with the "Squeeze Box".
The conflict with the Comsomol and the Young Pioneer (Russian Communist youth organisation)with the hipsters was there, but in the movie this has been exagerrated a little bit.
Perhaps with future western audiences in mind. I remember the battle lines a little bit more fluid. More like a generational conflict.
