by Brian Martin

4.0 out of 5 stars Social defence, social change, 9 Feb. 2010
Many non-violent activists are well aware of the connection between non-violent action & social change. Social defence is not just a defence option: it is a direction for action that should be known to all who seek a society without oppression, inequality or violence. Filled with examples from Finland to Fiji, the book also provides a provocative survey of radical alternatives in politics and economics.

5.0 out of 5 stars What is anarchism?, 9 Feb. 2010
Today the word anarchism inspires both fear & fascination, but few people seem to understand what anarchists believe, what they want and what they do. To help readers answer these questions, the editor brings together contributions from Michael Bakunin, Alexander Berkman, William Godwin, Peter Kropotkin, Errico Malatesta, William Morris, Rudolf Rocker, Donald Rooum, Phillip Sansom, Colin Ward and many others.

Act for Yourselves: Articles from "Freedom", 1886-1907 (Freedom Press centenary series)
by Petr Alekseevich Kropotkin
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars The anarchist formerly known as Prince, 9 Feb. 2010
Kropotkin wrote these articles to apply the theoretical principles of anarchist-communism to the practical problems of the Britain that he was living in a century ago - much of which is still very relevant today. He argued that the revolution should be based on the direct action of the mass of people and that it should culminate in the satisfaction of personal needs and the estalishment of complete liberty and equality.

5.0 out of 5 stars The anarchist formerly known as Prince, 9 Feb. 2010
The state is there not just to keep law & order or to settle disputes, but to promote, uphold and defend systems of social and economic inequality - in others words, class interests. To really understand the state you must study its historic development, as Kropotkin does so in this brilliant, erudite and provocative essay, and he demonstrates a comprehensive understanding both of the nature of the state and the social conditions that support it.

Rudolf Rocker left Germany in 1892 to escape police harrassment, eventually settling in the East End of London. Here he organised the immigrant workers, and soon rose to prominance as one of the best-known and best-informed European anarchists. This book is considered to be Rudolf Rocker's most accessible work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Anarchist Essays, 9 Feb. 2010
This review is from: Anarchist Essays (Paperback)
Charlotte Wilson was the principal founder of Freedom press back in 1886 and she was the first editor of the anarchist newspaper, Freedom. She had been writing about anarchism in the socialist press since 1884, and she led the anarchist faction in the Fabian Society. Like the work of her better-known contemporary, Peter Kropotkin, her writings are scholarly, original, thoughtful and clear. This book is edited with an introduction by Nicholas Walter.
