1.0 out of 5 stars Fraud under Amazon's noses, 13 Mar. 2016

This review is from: From Stalingrad to Kursk (DVD)
This is the biggest fraud I have ever experienced under Amazon's aegis. From Stalingrad to Kursk took the US historian David Glantz about half a dozen fat volumes. The DVD I received is a shabby disc, with no publisher,, no date,, no details of ANY sort. Just one disc. The funniest thing, if it isn't a crime I should report to the authorities, is that the shoddy disc is only half full!! Do Amazon preside over this kind of fraud on a regular basis?

PS: I see that this disc is produced by someone called Eagle Rock Entertainment. The content of the disc is clearly plagiarised film sequences from other (reputable) DVDs. No indication of which lot are Germans and which Soviets. In the midst of this melange of large stretches of action sequesnes with nary a commentary, there is, believe it or not, a long extract from the Moonlight Sonata! I kid you not: This is Eagle Rock's idea of a sound track. I have no doubt that they should have a back-breaking frine put on them for what we, the viewers, are constantly warned is a criminal offence. D.N.

An Introduction To The English Novel Volume One Defoe To George Eliot - Scholar's Choice Edition
An Introduction To The English Novel Volume One Defoe To George Eliot - Scholar's Choice Edition
by Arnold Kettle
Edition: Paperback
Price: £16.99

5.0 out of 5 stars and the one by that Great ex-Postmodernist, now (undefined) Marxist, 14 Jan. 2016
I knew the author when I wasan undergraduate at the University of Leeds. His lectures were a model of lucily stated profundity. It generally took a fortnight to realise just what doors of insight he had opened. The same applies to this classic 2 volume study of the evolution of the English Novel. All the existing books of this kind require a degree in linguistics as well as English literature to understand, and the one by that Great ex-Postmodernist, now (undefined) Marxist, Terry Eagleton, deserve to be remaindered. The reaction of my daughter, to whom I gave these two volumes and who is now a Labour M.P. takes one straight to the heart of this survey's greatness. Speaking of the essay on Emily Bronte's WUTHERING HEIGHTS, Lisa said,"He never talks down to you, but the really thrilling thing about Arnold is that he doesn't tell you WHY Wuthering Heights is great, he explains to you why YOUR first sense of the novel's impact is right, with telling comments on specific passages which makes you remember a University textbook for the rest of your life." And the late Edward (later Lord) Boyle, a TORY Cabinet Minister is his time, once observed over dinner on his magnificent country mansion, Occam Hall, that of all the chapters the analysis of Conrad's NOSTROMO was the finest critical essay of that difficult novel that he knew. And I have a distant recollection of walking to a lecture on the picaresque novel by the Coleridge specialist, the late Peter Mann saying, with the shrug,, in response to "What are you going to say, Peter?", "What is there to say? Everything worth saying is there in 3 paragraphs of Atnold's first vol." These books need no recommendation from me. Just buy them and see what these three utterly diverse people valued in Arnold Kettle's Introduction.

Brilliant execution, superlative recording. A must for every Baroque music lover's collection - as well as some of Geminiani's other works, like his 'La Folia' variations on Corelli's Op. V

5.0 out of 5 stars The Fascinating Giulini, 6 May 2014
It is an infamous obloquy on this most fascinating, complex and above all curious man in the world. In the late 60s and earlt 70s I was a Visiting Fellow at an academic Instotute in Chicago, and, when the Board of the Lyric Opera and the Chicago Symphonic decided to appoint both Giulini and Solti as Co-Directors, they reached an astonishingly sensible arrangement: Solti would take care of the administrative as well as musical side, while Carlo Maria would only concern himself with music. Each time I was in Chicago I had lunch with one or both - both of them were endlessly curious about the ghastly racial state of the City, something they had never experienced before. I well remember Carlo Maria, after a performance of Schubert and Beethoven, asking me over dinner about the notorious South Side ghetto of Chicago, where Mayor Daley had virtually locked up the black population. "Is it true? Can it really be true?", he kept asking, " And then they come here to listen to divine music - perche? - do they think it will cleanse their souls?". Solti, more worldly-wise, used to say, "Make your music here Carlo, and then beat the hell out." To have the privilege not only of hearing two such giants twice a year, but conversing with them would disabuse anyone ignorant of them that Ciulini was the "Least Interesting man" - as ignorant an insult as I can think of.

Does Solomon Volkov actually exist? Because if he does only something like the mediaeval rack seems the only treatment for his utterly meretricious and vulgar attempt to rise to fame on Shostakovich's coat-tail. Thankfully, Laurel Fay's rigorously scrupulous biography has - or ought by now to have - consigned this monstrosity to be sent for pulping.

Open a jar of honey, and the first thing you do is to dip a finger in the golden liquour - surresptitiously. But Tasmanian Leatherwood Honey? The moment you screw the jar open, the rich, sweet yet tangy bouquet overpowers you. Somehow you cannot ceonceive of a time when you will want anything else.
