Aesop's Fables A New Revised Version From Original Sources
Aesop's Fables A New Revised Version From Original Sources
Price: £0.00

3.0 out of 5 stars A number of stories that we are all familiar with ..., 14 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A number of stories that we are all familiar with are here and many that we are not familiar with. This revision is from the late nineteenth century and the language is a little stilted in places. Often, the conclusion that the author draws does not follow from the fable or it is not the only conclusion that could be drawn. The author uses the term Reynard for the fox that is found in many of the fables but this term is drawn from the Northern European tradition of such stories. This text is not illustrated and I think it could have done with such especially if be read to children.

This review is from: These Old Shades (Paperback)
I have loved this book since I was eleven. And was so pleased to be able to read it again. I think it the best of Georgette Heyer's oeuvre. This work has been praised by Margaret Drabble.

5.0 out of 5 stars This wonderful book predates the advent of moving pictures, 13 Nov. 2014

This review is from: Treasure Island (Kindle Edition)
This wonderful book predates the advent of moving pictures. If I did not know that I would say the author had kept an eye on the film adaptation. Cinematic is one word that could be used for this tale of pirates and gold.

Grampa's Cribbage Secrets
Grampa's Cribbage Secrets

3.0 out of 5 stars This would be a nice way to introduce a young adult to cribbage theory, 25 Oct. 2014
This would be a nice way to introduce a young adult to cribbage theory. It has a clear introduction to position play and a hand evaluation system which I believe to be original though of limited value.

It could have done with some proof reading.

1.0 out of 5 stars Had Product Returned, 29 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The sharpness of the two black ink cartridges faded immediately.

I managed to have this product returned.

Reading the other reviews this product clearly seems hit and miss.

Don't take a chance on it, if you ask me.

Betting Systems That Win: Racing with a Pocket Calculator (Leisure Know How)
Betting Systems That Win: Racing with a Pocket Calculator (Leisure Know How)
by John White
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars Calculator, Calculator, 30 Nov. 2013
This book provides a system for selecting which races to bet on and then several systems for choosing which horses to bet on.

The author does not make his underlying assumptions clear but they are easy enough to deduce.

There is even something for those who like to bet on the dogs.

This is not a great book but it is not a bad one either.

I found some value it in. Maybe you will too.

Play gin to win / by Irwin Steig
Play gin to win / by Irwin Steig
by Irwin (1901-) Steig
Edition: Hardcover

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful Though Limited, 22 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is not a definitive gin rummy book as is claimed on the inside of its dust jacket.

It is a useful yet limited text.

I have read a lot of the gin rummy literature and had to dig to get some value out of this book.

Most of the advice is sound enough though some of it is questionable in places.

The text could also have done with better editing.

I don't think the book even makes good on the claims at the foot of its front cover.

Play Winning Cribbage
Play Winning Cribbage
by De Lynn Colvert
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Cribbage Text, 21 Nov. 2013
This review is from: Play Winning Cribbage (Paperback)
A classic text that introduced the '26 point theory' into the public realm. Though the author has made some of the information in this book available for free online you still need to purchase this. This book is a must for the serious cribbage player.

More Dark Secrets of the Turf
More Dark Secrets of the Turf
by John White
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars Not So Dark Secrets Of The Turf, 11 Nov. 2013
This book is disappointing compared to its predecessor 'Dark Secrets Of The Turf'. The author took some of the ideas put forward in 'Dark Secrets Of The Truth' and teased them out fully in this text.

The scope of this book is inevitably narrower than its predecessor's because of this.

Nevertheless, if you are an on course, small meeting, punter then this book should be of value to you.

Value Betting: Professional Approach to Horse Racing and Sports Betting
Value Betting: Professional Approach to Horse Racing and Sports Betting
by Mark Coton
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Seminal Work, 11 Nov. 2013
Mark Coton is the originator of the Pricewise column that first introduced the racing public to the notion that in addition to picking a winner you needed to pick a winner that was well-priced. He laid it all out in this book. His thinking became part of the "common sense" of punting.

There is still value to be found in this text.

Make no mistake this is a seminal work.
