"Odi profanum vulgis" - beware the unwashed mob. This is an outstanding examination of group thinking heading in the wrong direction and is carefully written, directed and performed so that we can be in no doubt.
An element that I detected is the sense of class in Danish society. The educated man of means seems to be the only one who believes his protestations of innocence, apart from the protagonist's son and the female school aide from Poland who is herself an outsider.
The problems displayed here aren't just those of rural communities but their particular closeness (for good and ill) and their acceptance of traditional male values add extra dimensions of physical danger to the events.
Who shot the dog? And who fired the last shot? Watch closely and you will form your opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eclectic vivid and authentic, 24 Feb. 2014

Friedrich's later book CITY OF NETS about Hollywood in the forties makes a wonderful ompanion piece to this examination of the Weimar Republic, its politics, its creativity and its perversity. Unerlying everything was economics. Friedrich has a gift for the vivid phrase or quotation and his chosen anecdotes are always pertinent and revealing. His knowledge of the characters in the twenties following through to the Diaspora is profound.
One tiny caveat: this book was written in the seventies so certain attitudes may strike the reader as old-fashioned. Take that into consideration and read on.

They don't make them like this any more - money, you know. So enjoy this spectacular series for its cast, its costumes, its sets and location work and above all for E F Benson's mad, mad world.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is just the beginning, 1 Oct. 2013

With a central performance by Mads Mikkelsen that couldn't be bettered and, I hope, a long dramatic arc to come this first season delivers in spades.
The quality of the production is apparent in the casting, the visuals and the subtle sound and music track.
The writing is good but has yet to break completely free from its bookish origins. When it does this series will go where Breaking Bad, Deadwood and The Sopranos have gone - into the truly surreal.

Victorian childhood in all its glory and grimness. Rather comparable to some of Rudyard Kipling's stories like Riki Tiki Tavi in atmosphere. Not quite the magic of Dream Days but pretty good.

3.0 out of 5 stars light romp but why, Mona, why TBL and not MM?, 12 May 2013

Mona's found her dream man, literally, and he is so much sexier and nicer than the reality that I can't quite believe she'd go off with the real man. However, the journey to the end is fun and the film is full of the usual Danish suspects. Hooray!
