The Bread Baker's Apprentice: Making Classic Breads with the Cutting-edge Techniques of a Bread Master
The Bread Baker's Apprentice: Making Classic Breads with the Cutting-edge Techniques of a Bread Master
by Peter Reinhart
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £27.20

5.0 out of 5 stars The one essential guide to bread baking, 12 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Our youngsters refer to the kitchen at home as 'the laboratory'. Of all the experimenting that goes on, the most delight is found in bread making. Peter Reinhart's informed, beautifully illustrated, well-bound (thread-sewn, hard-cover) guide combines his extensive practical experience as a bread-maker with fascinating information about the chemistry of what is taking place when one bakes bread. This is not a recipe book, although it contains a wealth of recipes, and it is not a 'how to' cookery book, although it contains detailed useful instructions. It is an essential artisan's companion for anyone interested in the art and craft of making a variety of good, workman-like breads.

4.0 out of 5 stars My Intelligent Design Award, 21 July 2012

Kingston make memory storage devices and cards. And they do that really well, producing in their Data Traveler series some of the most reliable, trusted flash drives around.

Aesthetic design, however, has not been their strong point. Until the arrival of the SE9 which deservedly won this year's Red Dot Design Award.

It also wins my top memory stick award for Intelligent Design. Beautiful, slim, simple, low-profile design. Excellent form (shape) with no lateral bulk to shoulder other USB devices aside. Great functionality with no cap to get lost, strong steel case to protect its inner-workings, integral large eye for attaching to key chain or neck loop, and good reading/writing speed, and reliable data storage.

The Data Traveler USB 2.0 SE9 series, which comes in either 8Gig or 16Gig format, is not lightning fast in a Kingston Traveler stable that includes the USB 3.0 Ultimate (100MB/s Read 70MB/s Write).

In tests I ran on the SE9 8gig stick on my PC with Windows Vista running in XP mode (absolutely hated Vista, but XP works fine until I upgrade to 7.0) I got a read (copy from PC onto SE9 memory stick)of 2.83MB/s, copying a large 983MB file. Writing to PC is much faster: the same file written from the memory stick to PC transferred the file at a rate of 16.35MB/s. Smaller files write at considerably greater speed. Read/Write speeds naturally depend on the machine and software you are using.

Price-wise however, you get great value for money. A beautifully-designed, very-affordable, practical, sturdy, reliable device.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharp little kitchen wonder, 5 May 2012
The new Victorinox 6.7833 Tomato Knife is 222mm in overall length with the fully-serrated, round-ended blade making up half that at 11cm. I soon found it to be the most versatile of all my kitchen knives and it is a boon when handling stuff that even a slightly blunt larger knife just squishes (like over-ripe tomatoes). Great for slicing any fruit and vegetables, including dicing and thin-slicing onions, and perfect for making sandwiches as it both spreads and cuts. And just wonderful for cutting thin slices of oranges and lemons when making marmalade. Best marmalade preparation knife I have ever had. It cuts superbly and efficiently. As I found to my cost when trying to squeeze out just one more paper-thin slice. Yes, you must treat it with respect, but that is a small price to pay for this most useful kitchen tool. I have ordered several more to ensure that I am never without it.
