Waiting for Wednesday: A Frieda Klein Novel (3) (Frieda Klein Series)
Waiting for Wednesday: A Frieda Klein Novel (3) (Frieda Klein Series)
Price: £3.99

3.0 out of 5 stars Frieda revisits her childhood home, 13 Jun. 2016

I always enjoy Freida Klein and her compulsive quirks. However, I did feel in this one where FrIeida goes back to the village she was brought up in to investigate an unexplained suicide, that the series of events strained credibility. If I had read this book first, I probably would not have read another in the series and missed some really good reads.

Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay (Neapolitan Novels Book 3)
Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay (Neapolitan Novels Book 3)
Price: £7.40

5.0 out of 5 stars The final stage of an extraordinary friendship, 4 Mar. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
So sad to come to the end of these novels. An extraordinary description of a friendship between two women who define themselves through each other. They are distinctly flawed and not particularly likeable women, but all the more compelling because of that. Perhaps the real star of the four books though is Naples - the reader has such a clear picture of the impoverished neighborhood that has formed these women and their community. By returning to the neighborhood Lenu completes the journey that began in the first book and we can measure Lenu and Lina's changes and the indelible marks old Naples has left on them

The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared
The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared

3.0 out of 5 stars A feel good book, 25 April 2013

A pleasant and inventive book by Jonasson about a 100 year old man who escapes from his retirement home and gets involves with petty criminals and misfits as well as Stalin, Mao and other 20th century leaders.somewhat like Forrest Gump. Many amusing moments as we travel along with the genial central character but after a while, the ideas become a little repetitive.

A psychological mystery about a middle aged woman who begins each day with no memory of her previous life including the man she seems to be married to. A page turner and an interesting plot with a nice twist at the end. An enjoyable read.

3.0 out of 5 stars The old crew are showing their age, 25 April 2013

Typical Leone mystery with some nice images of Venice. Brief appearances by Patta and Brunetti's family but plot itself rather insubstantial and although a Donna Leone fan, I couldn't remember what this one was about a few days after reading it.

Citizens of London: The Americans Who Stood with Britain in Its Darkest, Finest Hour

5.0 out of 5 stars A page turner, 10 April 2013

This a fascinating account of 3 influential Americans who had a crucial role in changing US opinion towards helping Britain in WW2. The author manages to combine factual accuracy with compelling accounts of this critical time. The reader becomes spellbound by Winant's, Murrow and Harriman's experiences in London during the bombing of London and the UK and the portraits of Roosevelt and Churchill are fascinating as each tries to combine national and personal goals. I found myself limiting my reading as I didn't want the book to end and felt so sad when it did.

Well-written and sympathetically drawn characters that intertwine civil rights and holocaust narratives in a gripping and effective way. My only disappointment was the author's desire to wrap everything up neatly at the end which was a pity. A very good read nonetheless.
