5.0 out of 5 stars Be Glad You've Got Ears, 16 Nov. 2007
This review is from: Falling Forward (Audio CD)
What a voice and what a collection of fantastic songs. Not a bad track on the album. From the opening song - I Can't Help Myself - and its amazingly hynotic rhythmn/beat to the closing bars on Safe, you are entranced by the most amazing range of emotions you can imagine. The lyrics themselves are worth buying the record for but coupled with the outstanding arrangements and orchestrations plus Julia's voice, the collection is sensataional. Cannot recommend this album too much. Listen to it and be glad you've got ears.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still as Good as Ever, 12 Nov. 2007
This review is from: Immunity (Audio CD)
Got the original on vinyl and it still sounds as fresh today as it ever did. Way ahead of its time and if real talent counted for anything at all then Hine should have been a very big star. Unfortunately, he was overlooked by too many but this record should convince everyone just how good he was.

1.0 out of 5 stars Conned and Very Disappointed, 3 July 2007
This review is from: Sound Of Silver (Audio CD)
Bought this on the strength of the reviews. What a mistake!! With the exception of the opening track, the rest of the album is poor and leaves a lot to be desired. Nothing exciting about the music at all. Just a lot of discordant noise, badly played with some of the worst and weakest voice-overs I've heard in a long long time.

Don't know what most of the other reviewers were listening to but can they please let me know what they were drinking or smoking at the time so I can avoid the same substances myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, 16 Aug. 2006
This was the first album I bought by Lucinda Williams and it remains one of my favourites. It started me off buying all her records and I don't regret it at all. Her songs and her singing are simply of the highest order. She covers the full range of human emotion in her lyrics and her voice is always a perfect match. Listen and be enchanted by one of the finest musical artists alive.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste Of Paper, Ink and Time, 16 July 2005
This review is from: In The Shape Of A Boar (Paperback)
Really looked forward to reading this after seeing its reviews. Just goes to show that you shouldn't believe everything that other people tell you. The characters, both ancient Greek and modern, are totally unrealistic and act and talk in completely unnatural ways. You never get a feeling that the people are real so that you can never relate to them at all. Sol's lapses of memory are very convenient for allowing the author to paper over huge discrepancies in the story. Other reviewers talk about the multi-layered aspects of the book. What they should really say is that the story(?) is just a mish-mash of events and people which has no structure and culminates in a totally unsatisfactory ending.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not quite a complete waste of money, 15 Dec. 2003
This review is from: North (Audio CD)
The case has been used for another CD which had a cracked one and the CD itself is being used as a drinks coaster. Not a very good one as it is too slippery. As for the music(?), I'd rather not say too much as I may offend some people. Suffice to say, it is a series of dirges that does not improve with listening and leaves you reaching for the razor blades by about the third track.
In summary, avoid at all costs!!!!!

A Short History of Byzantium
A Short History of Byzantium
by John Julius Norwich

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to a Fascinating Subject, 1 May 2002
JJ Norwich manages to condense over 1,000 years of history into a single volume and does it with style. The book is well-written and keeps the reader's interest from beginning to end. For me, this has certainly whetted my appetite for buying and reading the original 3-volume work and also other books on this amazing period in European and Asian history. It is amazing how much of our culture and knowledge is owed to the Byzantines and until you read about them, how little most of us know.
I can heartily recommend this book to anyone who has the slightest interest in understanding more about how religion, ambition, greed, courage, vice, weakness and many other factors intertwined to dictate the course of the Empire and indeed most of Europe and Asia Minor over such a long period of time.
