This is an exciting page turner. The has twists and turns. I liked the Midlands setting and the contrast of class and cultures. Well worth reading.

I read the inheritance, so was interested to see another side to the family saga. I enjoyed the detail and analysis of complex and often fraught relationships. Worth a read!

5.0 out of 5 stars well worth a read, 9 Mar. 2015

I was a little confused at the start of this book, but it seemed to turn a corner and then take off. Helpful and funny, while at the same time irreverently shining light on a serious subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who would want to be in this club?, 17 Mar. 2014

Many people when they leave a highly controlling religious group, ride on the back of frustration and the weapon of choice for healing takes different forms. Some choose the deconstruction of doctrine; others choose to flail around rehashing the pain. Some walk away in silence and bury the confusion in negative behaviour.

Richard E. Kelly has chosen a different path. His writing is that of a man who has looked inside himself, accepted what he sees and is now trying to help others make sense of destructive religious childhood messages. This is a refreshing, intelligent and progressive approach. The metaphor of ghosts works well. It takes courage to dispel those fearful memories which often can turn into unconscious choices.
This book is a sequel to his first contribution - Growing up in Mama’s Club. I would also recommend that book.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a trip!, 13 Feb. 2014
I have just finished reading the kindle version of this book. Value for money or what! I wished I had read it, it 30 years ago. It is sad that the writer had to experience the nightmare of Bethel working life. What is good, is he left the cult and was able to write about the experience without looking back. What I particularly enjoyed was throughout this experience, the writer was a thinker, who had his own moral compass and value system. He stood up for what was right and wrong. He admits his mistakes and revels in his decision to create a better life for himself. He challenges the circles of power and looks for answers.
If this helps just one JW from having a tormented life then, its done its job. I suspect however, it will help more than just one, wake up, reflect and move on.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story on different levels - loved it!, 2 Dec. 2012
On one level this book is about a journey. It is a relationship journey. Interconnections are made between the past and present. It is also about perception and how people experience different realities, based upon their readiness and openness to feel and accept. Chris Keil has accomplished a lot in this book. Not only is it set in Portugal, it travels across political events, the ignorance and passion of youth and the choices we make as adults. This a rich book on many levels. I recommend it to book clubs as I would think everyone would see a different angle, value or hate a contrasting hero or heroine, or just love the use of language.

This review is from: Portuguese Somersault (Hardcover)
I read this because I live very close to some of the places that the writers travelled to during the 1950's/ 1960's. Not much has changed. The food is the same, the people are the same, the culture is wonderfully slow and relaxed. I wish they had written more.

I think this book is useful, not just for UK climates. I use it for a Med climate. I have not bought one of these guides before, but would purchase one of these guides again. Information is helpful and clear. Photos are useful.
